St. John’s to Begin Conference Play at No. 6/6 Villanova

QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team will open up BIG EAST play on Saturday afternoon when it heads to No. 6/6 Villanova.
First face-off from Villanova Stadium is set for 1 p.m. with Nick Mantenga on the call on FloSports.
The Red Storm are fresh off a narrow defeat to RV/RV Richmond, 11-8, on Saturday in its non-conference finale.
Bobby Seel led the charge for the squad logging a career day at DaSilva Memorial Field. The sophomore midfielder tallied new personal best in goals (3) and points (4) against the Spiders.
Scoring leader Brian Kelly added four points (3 G's, 1 A) on Saturday, marking the fourth game where the sophomore tallied four points or more. In just 23 career appearances for the Johnnies, the dynamic attackman has logged three or more points in 16 of them.
Kyle Munson steered away 11 shots, including making 11 saves in the opening half. The senior is averaging 14.5 saves over his last two starts. For the year, the Drexel transfer averages 12.1 stops per outing, which ranks second in the BIG EAST and top-25 nationally.
Senior captain Connor Kalmus is enjoying his best season in Queens in his fourth-year with the program. The attackman ranks second on the team with 15 goals on the year and first in shooting percentage at a 32.6 percent clip.
Kalmus has had great success against Villanova throughout his career. In 2022, he fired in a career-high four goals on April 2, 2022. The senior has tallied five goals and one assist in three meetings with the WIldcats.
The history between these two conference foes spans nearly 40 years, as St. John's won the first meeting back in 1985.
Heading into the 25th meeting between the programs, Villanova leads the all-time series, 17-7, and has won eight straight. The last Johnnies win came in 2014 during, a 11-10 overtime win in Queens.
Last season, the Wildcats defeated the Red Storm, 22-9. Kalmus added a career-high four goals while Brian Kelly logged three points during the loss in Queens.
The top-10 ranked Wildcats are off to a racing start and sit at no. 6 in both national polls with a 7-2 record.
Villanova boasts wins over a pair of then-top-15 teams in Delaware and UPenn. In its last outing on Monday, the Wildcats fell at home to Brown, 13-11.
The squad is led by All-American Matt Campbell, who tops the conference averaging 4.86 points per game. The graduate student midfielder has tallied 209 career points, which ranks fourth among active NCAA Division I players.
