Red Storm and Bearcats to meet for the first time
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's lacrosse team will wrap up the second leg of its two-game road swing when it travels to Vestal, N.Y., to take on the Binghamton Bearcats. The weekend matchup is slated for a noon start from Bearcat Sports Complex.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jason Weinstein on the call. Live stats will be available on BUBearcats.com.
In its first midweek game of the season, the Red Storm fell to No. 9/8 Rutgers, 20-6, in Piscataway, N.J., on Tuesday afternoon.
Brian Kelly continued his excellent sophomore campaign, racking up four points on two goals and two assists against the Scarlet Knights. Kelly's total marked the fourth consecutive multi-point effort in 2023 and his sixth straight game with a goal going back to 2022. On Feb. 25 against Hofstra, Kelly became the fastest Johnnie to 50 career points since Joe Madsen, reaching the milestone in just his 17th career start.
Connor Kalmus scored twice on Tuesday to log three games with multiple goals, notching a hat-trick on opening day against Manhattan and scoring a quartet of goals against Hofstra on Feb. 25. The senior captain ranks second in several major categories, including goals (nine), shots (21) and shots on target (16).
Caleb Zuhoski has put together a balanced offensive season, boasting four goals and three assists, including a helper against Rutgers to extend his point streak to three starts. The three starting attackmen have accounted for 23 of the 32 total goals scored by St. John's this season.
In defense, it's been the newcomers who have been leading the charge. Despite missing Tuesday's game, Maryland transfer Jack Schirtzer leads St. John's with 10 caused turnovers and ranks second in the country with an average of 3.33 caused turnovers per game. Starting long-stick midfielder and Michigan transfer Gavin Legg ranks second on the team with six caused turnovers and eight groundballs. Freshman defenseman Harry Noel paces the Red Storm with 10 groundballs. Kyle Munson has tallied double-digit saves in all four starts this season, most recently stopping 11 shots against Rutgers.
Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two programs in their respective histories.
Binghamton comes into the matchup with a record of 2-1, dropping its first game of the season to Lafayette last Saturday.
Offensively, the Bearcats are led by Matthew Keegan and Thomas Greenblatt whom each boasts 11 points in three games. Keegan paces the team with nine goals while Greenblatt owns a squad-high six assists. In net, Connor Winters has averaged 15.67 saves per game good for second in the America East Conference. Winters also ranks second in the conference with a save percentage of 59 percent.
