St. John’s Drops Heartbreaker to Binghamton,13-12, on Saturday

VESTAL, N.Y. (March 4, 2023)- The St. John's lacrosse team dropped a tough battle to the Binghamton Bearcats, 13-12, at a snowy Bearcat Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Brian Kelly paced the Red Storm with five points, scoring two goals and dishing three assists. Saturday marked the fifth-straight multi-point game for Kelly, extending his point and goal streak to seven consecutive starts dating back to 2022. Kelly has tallied four or more points in each of his last three games.
Connor Kalmus notched his second natural hat-trick of the season, logging all three of his goals in the second quarter against the Bearcats. Saturday's effort was the second time in 2023 that Kalmus has scored three goals in the opening half of a game.
Caleb Zuhoski continued his run of strong performances, racking up four points on two goals and two assists. The starting attack combined for seven of the 12 goals scored in Saturday's contest.
Caiden Vlasimsky scored the first two goals of his career, and three other Johnnies- Sean Duffy, Gavin Legg and Luke Mangan- each found the back of the net once in the Red Storm's 12-goal afternoon.
Binghamton (3-1) opened the scoring in the first quarter with Thomas Greenblatt's first of the day on an assist from Gage Adams to give the Bearcats a 1-0 edge at the 7:34 mark of the opening frame.
St. John's (0-5) responded emphatically with a 3-0 run to close out the first quarter. Mangan found Zuhoski twice for the first two Red Storm tallies of the afternoon before the two reversed roles and Mangan found the back of the net to give the Johnnies a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Binghamton wrestled the lead back in the second quarter on the back of a 5-0 run to jump in front, 6-3, at the 8:46 mark.
Kalmus put together his own 3-0 scoring run to even the game 6-6, with 3:53 left in the first half.
A late Bearcats goal restored the hosts' lead, 7-6, heading into the halftime locker room.
In the third quarter, Vlasimsky quickly tied the game at seven with an impressive solo effort from the right wing for his first career goal.
The Bearcats responded with two quick goals to tip the scales in their favor, 9-7, at the 10:12 mark of the third period.
St. John's refused to go quietly, battling back with three straight goals to take a 10-9 lead at the end of the third. Kelly scored twice before assisting on Legg's second goal of the season.
The Red Storm gained a multi-goal advantage courtesy of a Duffy strike past the Binghamton keeper into the left side of the net to make the score 11-9 in favor of the visitors with just over 13 minutes to go.
Binghamton quickly cut the deficit in half, 11-10, less than a minute later before tying the game with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.
Vlasimsky found paydirt for a second time late in the fourth to give St. John's the lead, 12-11, with 2:36 to go in the fourth quarter.
Binghamton rallied for two goals in the closing minutes to escape with a 13-12 victory at Bearcat Sports Complex.
The Red Storm will be back in action next Saturday when it returns to DaSilva Memorial Field to host Jacksonville at 1 p.m.
