Men’s Tennis Opens BIG EAST Championships Quarterfinals Against No. 7 Marquette

The Red Storm will open the quarterfinals at 12:45 p.m. on Friday against seventh-seeded Marquette
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team is set to open the BIG EAST Tennis Championships in Cayce, S.C by Jeep against the seventh seed, Marquette, at 12:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

The conference announced on Monday that the Red Storm had earned the second seed in the event. The program has not earned lower than a two seed since the current format was adopted in 2014.
Last weekend, the Red Storm concluded its season with a pair of non-conference victory against Monmouth and Fordham. The Johnnies defeated the Hawks 4-2 on Wednesday. On Sunday, the Johnnies hosted the Rams in the season finale and took a 6-1 victory on "Senior Day".
Four Johnnies have logged double-digit win totals in singles play this season. Sergio Molina leads the squad with 14 singles wins, primarily occupying the second court. Carl Gustafsson and Ryota Kaneda are tied with 13 wins apiece. Freshman Nishant Dabas is fourth totaling 12 victories. Diogo Marques has occupied the top court in all of his matches, accruing a 9-3 record and is currently on a seven-match winning streak.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 18 different pairings this season. Kaneda and Adam Groves have played the most matches together as a duo (10) all of which in the No. 3 slot. Four tandems have each won four matches including Axel Vila Antuna and Marques, the most common option on the first court. Earlier in the year the pair cracked the Top 60 ITA Doubles rankings. Gustafsson and Dabas also tallied four wins as teammates and were the most used pair in the second spot this season.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish has reached the championship in each of his previous three seasons with the program, winning the crown in his first year.
Seventh-seeded Marquette enters the postseason 6-15 and 2-5 in the BIG EAST. The Golden Eagles notched a pair of wins against DePaul and Villanova in league play. Thomas Nelson leads the squad in singles play boasting an 11-9 record primarily out of the third court. In doubles play, the duo of Tin Krstulovic and Blake Roegner tout a team-high 11 wins with 10 in the No. 2 slot. Last season, Marquette was downed by third-seeded Xavier in the quarterfinals.
The Red Storm swept the Golden Eagles less than two weeks ago in Milwaukee, 7-0. St. John's has won five straight matches against Marquette. In postseason play, the Johnnies hold a 4-2 in matchups with the Golden Eagles.
The winner of the match will advance to Saturday afternoon's semifinal match against the winner of third-seeded Georgetown and sixth-seeded Xavier at 1 p.m.
The Cayce Fitness and Tennis Center will host the BIG EAST Tennis Championships for the seventh consecutive year and it will be run from April 21-23.
