The Red Storm will return to Queens on Friday for the next nine games
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will head to Fairfield for a Wednesday matinee tilt against the Stags at Alumni Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
The Red Storm were unable to capitalize against Villanova in a series with impactful tournament implications. Despite an impressive pitching performance by Hannah Mearns in the series finale, the Johnnies struggled to produce runs all weekend.
St. John's welcomed back Katie Whittaker to the lineup in the finale, whom before missing extended time was one of the best freshmen in the conference. The San Marcos native is tied for the team-lead of five home runs and ranks in the top-3 on the team in slugging (.532), on-base percentage (.410) and RBIs (16).
Freshman Jess Bianco had a successful week slate, hitting a team-high .385 across four games. The Cherry Hill, N.J. native also swiped five bags to improve her season total to 24, the second most by a freshman in the nation and she ranks 21st overall.
The Queen of Doubles, London Jarrard, ranks 11th in total doubles with 14 and her .39 doubles per game is the fifth-best in the nation.
The Johnnies are 3-0 in midweek games this season and have won their last five non-conference contests.
Fairfield won two of its five games last week, a doubleheader sweep of Niagara on Friday. After starting the season 3-0, the Stags dropped their next 11.
The Stags are led by contact-hitter Charli Warren. Warren leads the squad with 33 hits, 13 steals and a .337 batting average. Kaitlin Hoffman's .469 slugging and 16 RBIs is the most by any Fairfield player. In the circle, Allie Bridgman has held opposing hitters to just .259 while touting a team-low 3.36 ERA. She is tied with Alyssa Weinberg for the team-lead in strikeouts (43).
Head Coach Julie Brzezinski is in her 26th season with the Stags. She has accumulated 664 wins while guiding Fairfield to its only two NCAA Tournaments in program history (2015, 2017).
The Red Storm leads the all-time series 16-12 against the Stags. Last spring the Johnnies won a pair of games against Fairfield, 7-1 at a neutral site, and 4-3 in Queens. St. John's dropped its last meeting at the Stags in 2007 but the Johnnies are 6-3 in Fairfield.
The Johnnies will return to Queens to host Georgetown in its last home BIG EAST series of the season opening on Friday at 1 p.m. The Red Storm's next nine games will be at home before the season finale at Creighton on May 5-7.
