The Red Storm will host Georgetown this weekend in its final BIG EAST home series of the season
FAIRFIELD, CONN. – The St. John's softball team fell in a tight 1-0 decision on the road against Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Softball Field.
The Red Storm (15-24 overall, 4-11 BIG EAST) allowed the Stags (12-20, 6-6) to log just two hits in the contest.
Carolina Zamudio dealt through five innings. The Mexico City native allowed just two hits while striking out six Stags.
Ana Serafinko earned her first start as a designated player for the Red Storm and logged a pair of singles in her three at-bats.
Both teams engaged in a tight pitching duel allowing just a combined three hits across four innings. The Stags opted to pitch by committee, combining two hurlers in the first four.
Zamudio escaped a pair of jams unscathed in the first two innings. The sophomore stranded the leadoff hitter at third in the opening frame. In the second, the Stags loaded the bases, but Zamudio forced a Fairfield hitter to pop up to end the stanza.
The Johnnies threatened in the fifth inning for the first time on the day. Serafinko led off the frame with a single to left to start the rally. After a single, a fielder's choice and a walk, the bases were loaded with two outs. The third Stags pitcher of the game was able end the inning unscathed on a groundout.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fairfield scratched across its only run of the game. A pair of lead-off walks set the table for a Quinn McGonigle sacrifice fly to break the scoreless tie.
Once again in the seventh, Serafinko led off the inning with a single. She was removed for pinch-runner Madison Wallace, who advanced to third but was stranded on an inning-ending groundout to secure the 1-0 Stags victory.
The Johnnies will host Georgetown in its last home BIG EAST series of the season starting on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Red Storm Field. The three-game series will continue on Saturday at noon and conclude on Sunday at noon as well.
