The Red Storm are currently in a four-way tie for sixth in the conference
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will welcome Georgetown for its final BIG EAST home series of the season with three games in three days at Red Storm Field starting at 1 p.m. on Friday.
This series has potential BIG EAST tournament implications with the Hoyas currently occupying the fifth spot, with a three game lead over four teams tied for sixth with a 4-11 conference record. The Johnnies are included in the tie and with just six games remaining, every game is an opportunity to advance in the standings. The other three teams tied with the Red Storm are playing the top three teams in the league this weekend.
The BIG EAST Tournament is set to begin on May 10 and will feature six teams in a double-elimination format. This year's event will be held at the home of the UConn Huskies, Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
Saturday's second game of the series will be our NFCA Strikeout Cancer game. Alumnus Shirley Chui will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the game. A 50/50 Raffle for the American Cancer Society will also be conducted during the contest.
Earlier in the week, the Red Storm fell on the wrong side of a 1-0 pitcher's duel at Fairfield. Carolina Zamudio tossed five shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out six. Ana Serafinko logged her first collegiate multi-hit game with a pair of singles in the final three innings.
London Jarrard has been the Queen of Doubles this season, and ranks 12th in the nation with 14 total doubles and sixth in doubles per game (.38).
Jess Bianco ranks second in the nation in stolen bases among freshmen (24). Overall, she is 22nd in Division I.
Bob Guerriero is in his fifth year as head coach of the St. John's Softball team and is assisted by Grace Kramer and Marissa Rizzi. Kramer, a 2017 St. John's graduate, is in her fourth season as an assistant coach while Rizzi, a 2020 graduate, is in her second season as a coach as a part of the Red Storm program.
The Hoyas enter the series 14-25 overall and 7-8 in BIG EAST play. The squad opened the week with an 8-0 run-rule victory against Towson on Wednesday.
Last weekend Georgetown solidified fifth place in the conference taking two of three from Creighton. Georgetown has won two out of three in each of its last two series, against the Bluejays and the Friars.
Cameron Konda is the driving force for the Hoys offensive attack. The graduate student has belted a league-high 13 homers with eight of those in conference play. She also leads the BIG EAST with 36 RBIs and is second with a .704 slugging percentage. In the circle, Brooke Plonka leads the conference with 108 punch-outs and 38 of those of the looking variety. The leader of the Georgetown staff has compiled a team-best 4.30 ERA, six complete games, and held batter to hit just .231 against her.
Head coach Pat Conlan is in her 17th season at the helm of the Hoyas program serving as the first and only head coach.
Next week, the Red Storm will not play a BIG EAST series, and will host a trio of non-conference opponents for five totals.
