Peyton Cody broke a 1-1 tie with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 21, 2023) – The St. John's softball team came from behind to knock off Georgetown, 3-2 in the first of the three-game series on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The Red Storm picked up a huge win in conference play to move to 16-24 overall and 5-11 in BIG EAST play. The current fifth-place Hoyas drop to 14-26, 7-9.
Hannah Mearns logged her 16th start of the season and twirled her eighth complete game of the season and sixth win. She struck out five and walk just one batter. In the second inning, the junior struck out the side while throwing just four balls out of 15 pitches.
Peyton Cody logged a crucial hit in the seventh inning and notched a pair of RBIs.
In the Red Storm's second pitcher's duel of the week, the two squads combined for just three hits in the first four innings.
The Hoyas broke through in the top of the sixth inning. The reliever, Kayla Dunn, blasted a solo shot over the wall in left-center field. The Hoyas continued the threat with traffic on the base paths. Mearns stranded a pair of Hoyas to end the inning and keep the Johnnies within one.
The Red Storm responded in the bottom half of the frame with a lead-off single by Sydney Totarsky who then advanced to second on an error by the center fielder. In final pitch of a nine-pitch at-bat, Cassidy Stouffer laced a single to left to put runners on the corners with no outs. Then, Stouffer swiped a bag to set up a pair of Johnnies in scoring position, with no outs and the top of the order at the plate. With one out, London Jarrard was walked to load the bases. Anese Thompson drew a hit by a pitch to tie the game at one. The next batter, Peyton Cody squeaked a single past the diving Georgetown shortstop to plate a pair of Johnnies for a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Hoyas lead-off hitter reached on a double to left center. After a wild pitch and fielding error, Georgetown cut the deficit to one, with no outs and a runner on first. Jarrard made snagged a hot line drive to double off a Hoya bringing the Red Storm one out away from a victory. Mearns forced the last batter of the game to fly out to center to secure her sixth victory of the season.
The series will continue with the second game of series set to start at 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Red Storm Field. Saturday's game will be NFCA Strikeout Cancer Game. There will be a 5050 raffle for the American Cancer Society, and St. John's alumnus, Shirley Chui, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
