St. John’s Powered by Back-to-Back Home Runs in 5-3 Win Over Georgetown

Anese Thompson and Peyton Cody hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team overcame a deficit for the second-straight game in a 5-3 victory against Georgetown in the second of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The win drew the Red Storm (17-24, 6-11 BIG EAST) within one game of the Hoyas (14-27, 7-10) for fifth place in the BIG EAST Standings.
The Johnnies hit back-to-back home runs that gave the Red Storm the lead for good. Anese Thompson and Peyton Cody went back-to-back on consecutive pitches in the fifth inning.
Loreley Francia dazzled in 6.1 innings of relief to notch her fourth win of the season. The freshman allowed just four hits while punching-out nine Hoyas.
St. John's totaled 10 hits in the game, the fourth most this season. Four Johnnies recorded multi-hit games.
Georgetown wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard, tacking on two in the first inning. With two outs, Mae Forshey belted a solo home run to right center. After three Hoyas reached on walks, a single up the middle plated the second Hoya of the game.
The Hoyas added its third run of the game in the second inning. With a runner on second, a single by Mae Forshey extended the Georgetown lead to 3-0.
In the third inning, the Red Storm were able to capitalize on a few Georgetown miscues and cut the deficit to 3-2. The first two Johnnies reached on an error and a misplayed ball. Jess Bianco reached on a beautiful bunt in the triangle toward the third base side to load the bases. London Jarrard blasted the first pitch she saw to deep left-center field, but a great catch was made at the wall by the Georgetown center fielder. With two outs, Cody drove a two-RBI single into the outfield grass to shorten the Georgetown lead to 3-2.
The Red Storm tied the contest in the fourth inning. The Johnnies started the rally with two outs on back-to-back singles by Sydney Totarsky and Cassidy Stouffer. Bianco laced a single past a diving right side of the infield to plate Totarsky.
For the third consecutive inning, the Red Storm were able to put runs on the board, taking the lead for the first time of the day and totaling five unanswered runs. On the first pitch of the frame, Thompson hit a moonshot to deep center to break the 3-3 tie. On the very next pitch, Cody launched her own round-tripper off the scoreboard in left field to extend the St. John's lead to 5-3.
Francia secured the victory for the Red Storm shutting the door on the Hoyas in the top of the seventh by firing a 1-2-3 inning.
St. John's will aim for the series sweep on Sunday with the third game of the series set for 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Red Storm.
