The Red Storm won three of its four home BIG EAST series this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team fell to Georgetown in the series finale, 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
With the series win, the Red Storm (17-25, 6-12) currently occupy the sixth seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas (15-27, 8-10) finish the weekend in sole possession of fifth place.
In four innings of relief, Loreley Francia retired 12 of the 15 batters she faced while allowing one hit, one run and striking out five.
London Jarrard belted her sixth home run of the season, to regain the team lead. She also logged her team-high 21st RBI on the year.
For the second straight game, the Hoyas opened the first inning with a home run. Mae Forshey drove in a Hoya with a towering shot over the scoreboard in left field to give Georgetown a 2-0 lead.
The Red Storm responded in the bottom half of the inning to take its first lead of the game, 4-2. Jarrard started the scoring by hammering a 3-2 pitch over the wall in center to cut the deficit in half. After Anese Thompson reached on an error, Peyton Cody laced a double to left center to set up two runners in scoring position with one out. Katie Whittaker belted a single through the left side of the infield to give the Red Storm a 3-2 lead. With two outs, back-to-back singles scored Whittaker opening the lead to 4-2 after an inning in Queens.
The Hoyas took back their lead in the third inning by taking on a trio of runs for a 5-4 lead. A leadoff walk and back-to-back hits with one out loaded the bases for Georgetown. The Red Storm infield tightened preventing a Hoya runner to score on a fielder's choice. This set the table for Georgetown's pinch-hitter, Sophia Scarangella, who doubled in three runs for the Hoyas.
Kayla Dunn entered the circle for the Hoyas at the end of the first and held the Red Storm in check. She retired the first six she faced before an Amy Mallah single in the third inning. The Johnnies gathered two runners on with two outs, but were unable to capitalize.
In the fifth inning, Georgetown added an insurance run. With runners at the corners and the Hoyas drew a throw to second and were able to slip in a runner as the runner on third crossed the plate for Georgetown's sixth run of the day. Francia struck out the final two Hoyas of the frame to end the scoring chance.
Georgetown's Kayla Dunn shut the door on the comeback Johnnies, firing her third 1-2-3 frame of the game in the seventh to secure the 6-4 victory and avoid the sweep.
Next week, the Red Storm will continue its nine-straight home games with five non-conference matchups. The Johnnies will start the week on Wednesday against Manhattan before a doubleheader on Thursday against Sacred Heart. St. John's will close the week with a Saturday doubleheader against Bucknell. After Saturday's game a Senior Day presentation will honor the two St. John's seniors, Mallah and Natalie Alheidt.
