Men’s Tennis Heads to Marquette to Conclude BIG EAST Slate

The Red Storm enters the weekend 2-0 in conference play
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will play its only match of the week on Friday night at Marquette in Elite Sports Club – North Shore at 7 p.m.
Last week, the Red Storm split a pair of matches before Sunday's doubleheader against St. Francis Brooklyn and Queens College was postponed due to expected inclement weather. The Johnnies knocked off conference-foe Villanova 7-0 at the Courts at St. John's on Wednesday. On Friday, St. John's fell to No. 72 Yale, 4-0, in New Haven, Conn.
The Red Storm is a perfect 2-0 in BIG EAST play and touts a 14-5 overall record this season. This marks the sixth consecutive winning season for the Johnnies and the 10th straight campaign with double-digit wins.
Diogo Marques and Ryota Kaneda were named the BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week after a 6-1 defeat of Villanova's top pairing. The duo improved to 2-0 on the season with their first conference victory in their only appearances as partners last week.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings this season. The tandem of Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda have played the most matches together and their six wins by a duo are the most on the team. Carl Gustafsson totals a team-high 10 wins paired with five losses across five partners. Kaneda and Groves are the second-highest individuals with nine total doubles wins each. Giuseppe De Camelis touts a combined 8-1 record in doubles play across four different partners.
In singles play, four Johnnies have reached double-digit win totals. New Mexico transfer Molina paces the team with 12 victories. Gustafsson and Kaneda each have 11 wins for the second-most on the squad, and Nishant Dabas has added 10 victories.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies, he has accumulated an 80-21 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Marquette started the season 0-10 and has since won five of its last seven matches. The Golden Eagles are 1-2 in conference play with its lone win against DePaul, 4-3. After Marquette hosts the Red Storm on Friday, the team will face off against Villanova the following day. Last week, the Golden Eagles were knocked off by Creighton, 5-2, and Omaha, 6-1.
The Red Storm is 8-2 against the Golden Eagles all-time. St. John's is 4-0 in regular season play against Marquette and 1-0 in Wisconsin. The Johnnies have won the last four matches against the Golden Eagles, including a 4-3 home victory last spring.
St. John's will conclude the regular season portion of its schedule next week with a pair of contests against Monmouth and Fordham. The Johnnies will travel to Monmouth on Wednesday and host Fordham on Sunday.
