QUEENS, N.Y. (April 7, 2023) – The late Anthony Varvaro, former Major League Baseball pitcher and St. John's standout, will be honored at the Snug Harbor Little League's (SHLL) Opening Day at the SHLL Complex in Staten Island on Friday, April 14.
Varvaro, who tragically passed away in a motor vehicle accident while traveling to the World Trade Center Memorial on Sept. 11, 2022, as an active Port Authority police officer, served as the SHLL President from 2021 until his untimely passing.
Snug Harbor Little League will retire Varvaro's number 24 across Staten Island prior to the evening's first games at 5 p.m. SHLL Complex will officially become Anthony Varvaro Memorial Complex during the dedication ceremony.
A product of an organization that has held strong since 1964 on the north shore of Staten Island, Varvaro was on a mission to bring baseball into the community spotlight.
The former Red Storm star spent his time in the Snug Harbor community with the goal of improving facilities to increase enrollment, create a positive environment for high-level competition and strengthen the community that once fielded a young Varvaro. The Staten Island native guided the organization to new heights and provided over 550 boys and girls of diverse communities the opportunity to learn and play baseball and softball in one year.
Varvaro jumpstarted the conversations in the area, going door-to-door for signatures and sitting in on community board meetings to garner support for new lighting and upgraded facilities for local little leaguers. Unfortunately, the late hurler did not get to see his vision become a reality as the complex received new field lighting, a full turf field and an indoor batting structure for the 2023 season.
A six-year veteran of the MLB, playing for the Mariners, Braves and Red Sox, compiled a career 3.23 ERA through 166 appearances, 153 of which came with Atlanta.
The Seattle Mariners selected an All-American and an All-BIG EAST First Team selection out of Queens with their 12th-round pick in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft. Varvaro went 21-12 during his tenure with the Red Storm with a 3.48 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than 2-to-1. Opponents hit just .226 off the right-hander during his three years with the Johnnies.
