St. John’s Finishes Strong at Metropolitan Outdoor Championships

Jamora Alves captured the discus and javelin titles on Saturday
NEW YORK (April 8, 2023)- Six members of the St. John's track and field team put on an impressive display at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Jamora Alves impressed once again in the field for the Red Storm, posting wins in the discus and javelin throws with heaves of 48.76 and 38.35 meters, respectively. Saturday marked Alves' debut in the javelin throw and the freshman's first win of the season in the discus and second win overall.
Behind Alves, the Johnnies cleaned up in the discus throw as Samantha Morillo-Martinez, Martina De Buglio, Emma Woodcock and Desiree Pagan finished third through sixth. Morillo-Martinez tallied a season-best heave of 42.22 meters, and De Buglio notched a new personal best at 41.73 meters. Woodcock made her debut in the discus, registering a throw of 40.73 meters, and Pagan logged a personal-best toss of 39.40 meters.
Ismini Andreou tallied a personal best of her own in the hammer throw, logging a toss of 50.60 meters, surpassing her previous record by nearly three full meters. Pagan finished 10th with a career-best heave of 41.40 meters and logged a launch of 17.37 meters in her collegiate debut in the javelin throw.
De Buglio notched her second personal best of the day with a shot-put toss of 12.47 meters to capture second place in a career day for the freshman.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday when the team will split up and travel to the Larry Ellis Invitational and the UConn Invitational in New Jersey and Connecticut, respectively.
