St. John’s Competes at UConn Northeast Challenge

Several Johnnies logged personal and season bests during the two-day meet
STORRS, Conn.- The St. John's track and field team wrapped up its weekend of competition at the UConn Northeast Challenge at the George Sherman Family Sports Complex on Saturday.
As a team, the Red Storm tallied 37 points to finish seventh at the home meet of the Huskies.
Brooklyn Chestnut had a solid outing on the track, logging personal-best times in the 100 and 200-meter dashes at 11.81 and 24.34, respectively. The junior finished fourth in the 100 and seventh in the 200 meters. Delicia Bent secured ninth in the 200-meter dash with a season-best mark of 24.43.
In the 400 meters, Chinenye Onuorah and Nora Haugen each notched season-best times at 54.45 and 55.51, respectively. Onuorah finished third while Haugen captured 10th. The Red Storm now boasts three runners in the top three in the BIG EAST as Tatyana McKenzie, Onuorah and Haugen lead the pack in the conference. Nia Holden logged a time of 2:14.41 in the 800-meter run, her best result of the 2023 outdoor season. The 4x400-meter relay team posted a second-place result with a time of 3:41.93 which also ranks second in the league.
In the distance events, freshmen Ana Markovina and Ezgi Yasar registered personal bests in the 1,500-meter run with times of 4:44.53 and 4:52.40, respectively. Claire Cushing finished third in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line at 17:25.07.
In the field, Jamora Alves continued her excellent outdoor season, finishing second in the shot put with a heave of 14.69 meters. The freshman has logged shot put tosses of at least 13.85 meters in every outdoor meet she has competed in this season.
Next up, the Red Storm will split up and head to the Virginia Challenge and Mark Young Invitational. The two-meet slate will get underway on Friday.
