Tatyana McKenzie Named Most Outstanding Track Performer at BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Red Storm finishes second for first time in 34 years
VILLANOVA, Pa.- The St. John's track and field team wrapped up its final day of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Villanova Stadium on Saturday.
The Red Storm racked up 132.5 points across 22 events against the best of the conference to finish second for the first time since 1989. The Johnnies only trailed conference champion Connecticut.
The accolades continued as Tatyana McKenzie was honored as the meet's most outstanding performer for women's track along with Butler's Angelina Ellis, the second straight meet she accomplished that feat. McKenzie and Jamora Alves were also recognized as the high-point performers of the championships, tallying 20 points apiece. McKenzie's awards marked the fourth-straight outdoor campaign that a Johnnie has taken home both distinctions after Leah Anderson garnered both honors for three straight seasons.
The throwers got St. John's off to a raucous start on the meet's final day as Alves took home the conference title in the discus throw with an impressive heave of 51.37 meters. Samantha Morillo-Martinez found the podium as well with a toss of 42.43 meters to finish third.
The sprints team hit the ground running on Saturday as the quartet of Delicia Bent, Brooklyn Chestnut, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji and Tea Siehou captured a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter relay with a strong time of 46.68.
Later on, the fearsome tandem of Alves and Morillo-Martinez dominated the shot put toss, finishing first and second, respectively. Alves captured her second conference title in as many meets with a launch of 14.62 meters. Morillo-Martinez logged a heave of 14.23 meters to secure her second of the meet.
The sprinters crowded the podium once again, this time in the 400-meter dash as Chinenye Onuorah grabbed the conference title with a blazing time of 54.24, a new personal best for the freshman. McKenzie finished just behind with a mark of 54.37 to earn silver. Chestnut took the top spot in the 100 meters with a time of 11.81, edging out DePaul's Jetta Mays by one-hundredth of a second. McKenzie outpaced the field in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 24.01. Chestnut secured fourth with a mark of 24.38, and Onuorah grabbed fifth with a time of 24.53.
The Johnnies concluded the weekend with an exemplary effort in the 4x400-meter relay. The foursome of Nora Haugen, McKenzie, Onuorah and Mandana Vouillemin captured silver medals with a time of 3:44.69.
