Six Red Storm home runs are the most in a game since May 15, 2011, against Georgetown
With a balanced offensive attack, the Red Storm (26-25, 6-12 BIG EAST) cracked double-digit scoring for the 12th time this season and the fifth time in the last nine games. The team's 24 runs scored are the most in a game this season, surpassing the 22 tallies against LIU on March 15. All 10 players to record a plate appearance for St. John's on Thursday tallied at least one run scored.
The Johnnies registered six home runs in a contest for the first time since May 15, 2011, part of a 12-2 rout of Georgetown on the road. David Glancy and Jimmy Keenan became the first set of teammates to record two home runs apiece since Jeremy Baltz and Kevin Grove smacked a pair of their own in the same game against the Hoyas.
To go along with his two homers, Glancy put forth a stellar day at the dish with a season-high six RBIs and five runs scored, becoming the first player to cross home plate five times in a game since Jamie Galazin tallied five against UConn on March 16, 2018.
Freshman Keenan produced the first multi-homer game of his collegiate career to go with a personal-best four RBIs.
Sophomore Austin Machado belted his first career grand slam with his round-tripper in the third, marking the team's first since teammate Kevin Michaels did so against the Huskies on April 8, 2022. The California native finished the day with a 2-for-4 showing, posting four RBIs, four runs scored and a trio of walks. Tate Ballestero chipped in a trio of RBIs while Marty Higgins crossed home plate on three occasions.
Adams tossed the longest outing of his career, allowing no runs on five hits with three strikeouts across 5.1 innings of work to stifle the Butler lineup. His relief appearance tied for the longest by a Red Storm reliever this year, matching Nick Cirelli 's mark against Marshall on March 6.
Butler (12-41, 5-14 BIG EAST) jumped out to a 1-0 edge in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly.
The Johnnies quickly retaliated in the top of the second with a solo shot from Keenan, knotting the game at one apiece.
In the home half of the frame, the Bulldogs responded just as fast with a two-out solo home run of their own to reclaim a one-run advantage, 2-1.
St. John's blew the game wide open in the top of the third with one swing of the bat. After Higgins singled, Orbon reached on a fielder's choice and Glancy walked to load the bases, Machado smashed a 1-0 pitch to deep right-center for the grand slam and a 5-2 Red Storm lead.
The Red Storm continued to pour it on in the fourth with four more runs. After the younger Orbon ambitiously tried to stretch his RBI double into a triple for a 6-2 lead, Glancy belted the first pitch he saw for a solo homer and a five-run edge. Following a walk to Machado, Aaron Mann smashed a two-run blast to left, bolstering the Johnnies' lead, 9-2.
Butler drove in three runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a pair of RBI singles and another on a wild pitch to pull within four, 9-5.
It was all Red Storm from that point forward, scoring 15 unanswered runs over the final five frames. The Johnnies pushed its edge back to five, 10-5, in the fifth with an RBI double from Jace Jeremiah, bringing Higgins around to score.
After both teams were held off the board in the sixth and seventh innings, St. John's put a four-spot on the board again in the eighth. After the first three batters of the frame reached base, Ballestero drew a bases-loaded walk to knock home one run, 11-5. Two batters later, Paul Orbon roped a two-run single through the left side for an eight-run advantage. In the ensuing at-bat, Higgins took a 2-1 offering the same way and brought Ballestero in from second for a 14-5 lead.
The Johnnies added 10 runs in the ninth, behind a Glancy RBI double, a two-run single from Ballestero and a three-run homer by Keenan to take a 20-5 lead. Glancy stepped up to the dish for the second time in the inning, belting the Red Storm's second grand slam of the afternoon before closing the door on a 24-5 victory in the home half.
St. John's will return to action against Butler on Friday with first pitch from Bulldog Park slated for 3 p.m.
