The Johnnies and Bulldogs will square off on BIG EAST Digital Network on Thursday
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 17, 2023) – The St. John's baseball team will look to end the 2023 season on a high note, heading to Indianapolis for a three-game slate against Butler at Bulldog Park, beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m. on BEDN.
Friday's contest is also slated for 3 p.m., while Saturday's start time is set for 1 p.m. The final two games will be streamed live on Butler+ and live stats for all will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's (25-25, 5-12 BIG EAST) jumped out to a three-game winning streak with its 8-6 series-opening win against Xavier before dropping its final two contests at home, 4-2 and 5-1. The Johnnies utilized a five-run seventh inning and three RBIs and two runs scored from Aaron Mann to earn the two-run victory on Friday. Jimmy Keenan and Luke Orbon also put forth valiant efforts at the dish, driving in two runs apiece.
The Red Storm is one of two BIG EAST teams to log more than 100 doubles this season, sitting with 102 and trailing only UConn with 116. St. John's and Butler are the only two teams this season to register six doubles in a single contest, both accomplishing the feat on May 7. The Johnnies took down Villanova, 13-3, while the Bulldogs clobbered Georgetown, 20-7, both of which went only seven innings due to the 10-run rule on getaway day.
Austin Machado has been a steady presence in the middle of the Johnnies' lineup this season, reaching elite company with his ability to reach base safely. Through 41 appearances this season, the Californian boasts a .491 on-base percentage, ranking just outside the nation's top 50. Should he regain a .500 OBP after this weekend, he will become the seventh player to do so since 1976 and the first since Mike Antico in 2019. Machado also paces the team with 41 walks, averaging one per game (16th in NCAA).
St. John's and Butler will meet for the 31st time on Thursday with the Johnnies holding a 24-5-1 edge. The two programs ended their last meeting in a 12-12 tie, marking the first for the Red Storm since it drew with Southern Illinois on March 13, 2016. The result was the first tie for the Johnnies against a BIG EAST opponent since 1999 when they played Boston College to a 4-4 deadlock. Prior to the tie, St. John's held a three-game winning streak over the Bulldogs.
Led by first-year head coach Blake Beemer, Butler (12-40, 5-13 BIG EAST) has come on strong over the last two weeks, taking two of its three meetings with the Hoyas and nearly knocking off No. 9 UConn on the road in all three games.
The Bulldogs took the Huskies into extras in game one, dropping a 6-5 contest in 13 innings despite having four players produce multi-hit performances and the bullpen allowing just five hits over the final 8.2 innings of work. UConn walked off on Butler for the second-straight game, falling to the Huskies, 7-6. The Bulldogs had the last laugh with an 11-8 victory on Sunday behind a pair of four-hit showings from Scott Jones and Kollyn All, who combined for six RBIs on the afternoon.
Joey Urban and Carter Dorighi have been the Bulldogs' offensive leaders, both registering over 60 hits this season with 62 and 61, respectively. Urban's six home runs, 17 doubles, 34 RBIs and 35 runs scored also pace the team. The opposition is averaging 8.5 runs per game and hitting .295 against Butler this season.
