The Red Storm won the title in 2016
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 9, 2023) – St. John's softball will travel to Storrs for its 13th BIG EAST Tournament appearance opening up the first round against fourth-seeded Butler at noon on Wednesday at Burrill Family Field.
Adam Giardino and Kacy Standohar will be broadcasting the tournament on BEDN, with the semifinals and championship aired on FS1 and FS2. Live stats will be provided by StatBroadcast.
The Red Storm have reached its 13th BIG EAST Tournament. The Johnnies are an all-time 7-14 in the BIG EAST Tournament, 5-8 against current BIG EAST schools and 3-7 against teams in the 2023 field. St. John's is 1-0 against Butler in the postseason, a 9-3 semifinals victory in 2017.
Last weekend, the Red Storm took two of three from Creighton in Omaha to clinch the fifth seed. A blowout win on Friday, combined with a Providence loss meant that either a DePaul loss, or Red Storm win would clinch the Johnnies a spot. But the Red Storm dropped, 7-5, on Saturday and the Blue Demons won forcing a crucial pair of games on Sunday. With DePaul finishing first with a win, the Red Storm were forced to win in order to clinch a spot. Tied at five in the sixth, London Jarrard blasted a three-run home run to take the lead for the final time and send the Red Storm to Storrs.
Cassidy Stouffer is currently riding an 11 game hitting streak. The freshman is hitting over .500 during the streak and notched her first two career home runs.
Katie Whittaker's 13 hit by pitches, surpassed the previous single-season record of 11 by three Johnnies last in 2021.
Freshman speedster Jess Bianco has totaled a BIG EAST best 41 stolen bases this season. She is in need of five more swiped bags to tie Donna Dosanjos' 46-spot in 1990.
Last week, the team surpassed two new single-season records. With help from Whittaker, the squad has crushed the previous mark of 38 HBP in a season (2009), currently tallying 51. Bianco has guided the team to a new single-season high in stolen bases, 87 beating the previous mark of 78 in 1990.
Bob Guerriero is in his fifth year as head coach of the St. John's Softball team and is assisted by Grace Kramer and Marissa Rizzi. Kramer, a 2017 St. John's graduate, is in her fourth season as an assistant coach while Rizzi, a 2020 graduate, is in her second season.
Butler is 4-14 in their last 18 total games. The Bulldogs took one of three from Seton Hall this past weekend.
Offensively, the Bulldogs are led by Paige Dorsett. She drove in a team-high 30 bulldogs on eight homers and 10 doubles. Monique Hoosen leads the conference with 14 round-trippers. In the circle, Macke Griman paces the staff with a 3.72 ERA and nine wins. She has tossed 13 complete games and struck out 69 in 141 innings pitched.
The winner of St. John's-Butler will take on UConn on Thursday at 12 p.m.
UConn earned the regular season title with the fewest losses in the conference and are hosting the tournament. The Huskies will have a first round bye.
The Huskies are led by Lexi Hastings' .409 batting average, 36 stolen bases and six home runs. Aziah James has tallied 32 swiped bags, a .352 average and 30 RBIs. In the circle, Payton Kinney and Hope Jenkins have combined for 25 wins. Jenkins' 14 tops the Huskies staff. She has eclipsed the 100-K mark with 105 this season and Kinney has recorded 98. Meghan O'Neil leads the conference with eight saves and is second in the nation.
The loser of St. John's-Butler will take on the loser of Seton Hall-DePaul on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
Seton Hall dropped its final game of the season to Butler and dropped to the third seed as Villanova took two of three from the Pirates earlier in the season.
Abby Wingo led the team with a .403 average and 61 hits. She added 39 RBIs, six home runs and slugged .597. Miranda Arruda leads with 15 stolen bases as a pinch runner. Kelsey Carr has commanded the Pirates offensively and defensively. She slugged 11 home runs, hit .336 with a team-high 43 RBIs and drew 30 walks. In the circle, her 1.87 ERA was the top of the staff with 87 strikeouts, 10 victories, 11 complete games.
The Blue Demons forced their way into the field notching five out of their last six to earn the sixth and final seed.
