St. John’s to Welcome Monmouth in 2023 Home Debut

Friday will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the Red Storm and Hawks
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 2-2 draw with defending Big Ten Champion Rutgers, the St. John's men's soccer team will make its 2023 Belson Stadium debut when it welcomes Monmouth for a 7 p.m. showdown on Friday evening.
The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Nick De Luca and Ralph Bernarczyk on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com. Friday's contest with also feature a schedule poster giveaway and free ice cream at halftime for students.
The Red Storm battled Rutgers to a 2-2 deadlock in Piscataway, N.J., on Monday behind a brace from Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau. The redshirt junior found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal in the 31st minute before an 84th-minute strike, matching teammate Max McNulty, who tallied two in the season opener against Lehigh and secured a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection.
With the back-to-back two-goal efforts, it marked the first time since 1996 that two different players recorded a brace in the first two games of the season, joining Wojtek Krakowiak and Medufia Kulego, who also scored two in both games against Fordham and Hartwick.
As of Tuesday, 1996 National Champion Ben Hickey was announced as one of eight new inductees to the St. John's Hall of Fame. A three-time BIG EAST Champion, Hickey set the team record with 39 assists over his four years in Queens to go with 38 goals, the fourth-highest total in program history. His 115 career points are tied for second all-time with fellow Hall of Famer Fred Bischoff.

In the first matchup between the two programs in 1995, Hickey rattled off a goal and two assists while current associate head coach David Janezic scored in the inaugural matchup with a second-half strike that knotted the game at two apiece.
The Hawks (1-0-1) enter Friday's matchup with a 1-0-1 record, drawing a scoreless tie against Temple and taking down LIU, 3-1.
Monmouth utilized a three-goal second half against the Sharks to earn its first victory of the year, seeing a brace from Ben Zakowski and one goal by Kevin Zapata. The Hawks scored all three of their goals within a span of 10:07.
Zakowski entered the 2023 campaign being named to the Preseason All-CAA Team after a stellar 2022 slate. He tallied seven goals last season, three of which were game-winning tallies. Goalkeeper Eryk Dymora was also recognized by the league as an All-CAA Honorable Mention.
Head Coach Robert McCourt is in his 20th season with Monmouth, boasting nine conference regular season titles and six league tournament crowns during his tenure.
Former Johnnie Adrian Roseth will make his return to Belson Stadium after two seasons with the Red Storm. He appeared in 31 games for St. John's, helping St. John's to an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2021.
