Johnnies and Nittany Lions will square off in their eighth meeting all-time
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will look to continue its early-season success as it heads to Penn State for a 5 p.m. matchup at Jeffrey Field on Monday.
The contest will be streamed on B1G+ and live stats will be available at RedStormSports.com.
After Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau produced a brace in Red Storm's tie with Rutgers on Monday, the Canadian striker lifted the Johnnies to a 1-0 victory over Monmouth with a 60th-minute tally on Friday. Miguel Diaz ripped a pass towards the middle and redirected off Max McNulty 's feet before falling perfectly in front of the redshirt junior, who drilled home his third goal of the week.
McNulty also jumped out to a three-game point streak with his helper after logging a brace against Lehigh and assisting on one of Fleuriau Chateau's two goals against the Scarlet Knights. The duo leads the team in points with six apiece.
Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan has been steady in net for the Johnnies through three games, registering his first clean sheet with the Red Storm in Friday's victory.
Since the beginning of the 2010 season, the Johnnies are 105-9-10 when scoring before their opponent.
The Johnnies and Nittany Lions will square off for the eighth time in program history, posting a 3-3-1 record against each other. Neither program has lost a game on their home field in the series with the lone 0-0 draw coming at the University of Maryland's Lugwig Field in 2004.
With the new regular season overtime rules in effect, there will be no extra time despite St. John's and Penn State engaging in three thrilling contests that included two or more overtimes; 1999 NCAA Regional Second Round (2-1 PSU in 3OT), 2001 NCAA Regional Semifinal (2-1 SJU in 3OT) and 2004 Maryland/adidas Classic (0-0 in 2OT).
Red Storm Head Coach Dr. David Masur and Nittany Lion Head Coach Jeff Cook will square off on the sidelines for just the second time in their storied careers. The Johnnies took down Cook's Dartmouth Big Green, 1-0, in the 2005 NCAA Regional Second Round behind a Matt Groenwald strike in the 57th minute.
The Nittany Lions (1-0-2) enter Monday's contest on the heels of nearly taking down the nation's top team, Syracuse, with a 1-1 draw. Penn State had the Orange on the brink of defeat with Caden Grabfelder finding the back of the net in the 89th minute. Six seconds later, Syracuse's Pablo Pedregosa logged the equalizer and prevented the upset.
Seniors Peter Mangione and Femi Awodesu, along with fifth-year Kris Shakes were selected as Big Ten Players to Watch. Mangione also received national recognition with a spot on the United Soccer Coaches' Forwards to Watch list.
Shakes has been solid for Penn State through three games, logging 13 saves and surrendering just two goals, both against top-five opponents, No. 5 Pittsburgh and No. 1 Syracuse.
