Red Storm and Peacocks will meet for the ninth time since 1979
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will look to rebound from its recent setback when Saint Peter's visits Belson Stadium on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. contest.
Friday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Ralph Bernarczyk on the call. Live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com
St. John's will also be giving away free soccer stress balls at Belson Stadium as part of its Youth Night in Queens.
The Johnnies and Peacocks will meet for the ninth time since its inaugural match in 1979. Both programs are set to square off for the first time since Aug. 31, 2016, when the Red Storm secured a 2-0 victory in Queens. In a contest that erased a nearly 30-year hiatus between St. John's and Saint Peter's, Alistair Johnston netted the game-winner in the 28th minute off a cross from Ludvik Benco. Harry Cooksley tucked in his tally as time expired in the second half for the Johnnies' two-goal victory.
Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau is fresh off a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection after tallying three goals in as many games last week. The Canadian striker produced a brace in the Red Storm's 2-2 tie with Rutgers on Monday, followed by a game-winning tally to lift the Johnnies to a 1-0 victory over Monmouth on Friday. Fleuriau Chateau is tied with Max McNulty for the team lead in points with six.
The Red Storm is coming off a tough 2-0 road setback against No. 20 Penn State despite creating ample opportunities with more shots (14-7), more shots on target (4-3) and more corners (6-3). Of the 14 shots taken, St. John's ripped 11 of them in the second half.
The Peacocks enter Friday's match with a 0-2-2 record after their 2-0 loss at Rutgers on Labor Day. Saint Peter's held the Scarlet Knights scoreless in the opening 45 minutes while goalkeeper Pedro Alves worked towards nine total saves for the contest. Alves has been a workhorse through four games, tallying a nation's best 28 saves and ranking fourth in the nation with 7.0 stops per match.
Saint Peter's has also struggled to stay disciplined this season, sitting third in the NCAA Division I with 14 yellow cards. The Peacocks have made the most of their opportunities through four games, ranking 13th in the nation with 58.6 percent shot accuracy and seeing 17 of its 29 total shots on target. Daniel Larsson leads the team with two goals and four points.
