St. John’s Returns to Carnesecca to Face No. 19/20 Marquette

Red Storm will face second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will ring in 2024 with its return to Carnesecca Arena when it takes on nationally-ranked No. 19/20 Marquette on Wednesday night.
The conference contest will begin at 7 p.m. from Queens with Kim Adams and Maria Marino on the call on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
In its final battle of 2023, No. 21/21 Creighton pulled away from the Red Storm after a closely contested first quarter. The Bluejays caught fire from downtown shooting 5-of-6 in the third frame to earn a 67-56 victory in Omaha. St. John's outrebounded Creighton, 39-29.
Jillian Archer went for a season-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Her point total tied her highest in her two seasons at St. John's after totaling 19 against Iona on Dec. 8, 2022. The graduate student also grabbed seven boards at D.J. Sokol Arena. On the year, Archer is averaging 11.6 points on 62.5 percent shooting from the floor and 7.6 rebounds per game. Her field goal percentage mark ranks second in the league.
Unique Drake exceeded the 15-point threshold for the ninth-straight game and the 12th time in 14 contests. The redshirt senior finished with 16 points against Creighton. Drake earned her first-ever BIG EAST Player of the Week honor on Dec. 22 and ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring logging 19.7 points per game.
DePaul transfer Tara Daye has enjoyed a strong stretch of play and entered the starting line-up over the last four contests. On Saturday in Omaha, the sophomore tallied a season-high eight points on 3-of-3 shooting and a game-high nine boards.
The Red Storm have been performed well at home this season boasting a 5-1 record in contests in New York City. St. John's is holding its opponents to under 50 points per game (49.8) at home. The Johnnies hold a 20-5 record in their last 25 games in the friendly confines Carnesecca Arena, dating back to the 2021-22 season.
Marquette suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday at No. 15 UConn on New Year's Eve and holds a 12-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles got off to their best start in program history and have been ranked in the Associated Press poll for the last six weeks.
At UConn on Sunday, the Golden Eagles ran out to a 10-0 advantage before the Huskies took control and tallied a 95-64 win at the XL Center. Marquette has three players averaging more than 15 points per game in Liza Karlen, Mackenzie Hare and Jordan King. Karlen leads the team logging 16.8 per outing.
Head Coach Megan Duffy enters her fifth season at the helm. Duffy is familiar with Carnesecca as she served as an assistant coach with Joe Tartamella from 2009-12.
