Red Storm erased a seven-point deficit with 4:24 left to play to force the extra period
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.– The St. John's women's basketball team dropped a nail-biter in overtime on Monday night at Seton Hall, 74-66.
The Red Storm erased a seven-point deficit with 4:24 to play as a Ber'Nyah Mayo 3-pointer tied the game and forced the extra period at Walsh Gymnasium. It marked the first overtime contest for the Red Storm since Feb. 20, 2022 in a 68-62 win over Providence.
Mayo finished with a season-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor. The point guard also dished out six assists and logged two steals.
Tara Daye recorded a career-high 12 points during her homecoming in South Orange. The Newark N.J., native logged 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jillian Archer had a strong game inside posting 10 points, eight boards and tying her career in blocks with four.
As a team, the Red Storm blocked a season-high seven shots as Archer paved the way with her third four-block over the last six games.
After the Pirates scored the first basket, the Red Storm added the next seven points concluded by a 3-pointer from Unique Drake. The Red Storm logged one of its four opening quarter steals when Daye intercepted a pass and took off for an uncontested lay-up to make it 11-6. After a pair of Pirates baskets, Mayo converted at the charity stripe to bring a 3-point advantage in the second frame.
Seton Hall knotted the score line just 15 seconds into the second quarter as Micah Gray buried a triple. Neither team led by the more than three points in the second quarter, as the two sides battled at Walsh Gymnasium. Mayo swatted a pass in front of her and then took off for a finish on the fastbreak to give St. John's a slight edge, 21-18. Seton Hall went on an 8-3 run to end the half and carried a four-point advantage, 30-26, at the halftime break.
After the Pirates opened up their largest lead of the game to that point, 30-24, before the Johnnies spurred off a response and a mid-range pull-up from Skye Owen took the lead right back capping off a 7-0 run to go ahead, 31-30. Seton Hall finished the penultimate quarter on a 12-4 scoring spurt taking a seven-point cushion, 42-35, into the final frame.
St. John's (11-9, 5-3 BIG EAST) clawed its way back into the game as Mayo got the scoring started in the final frame after getting a lay-up to fall at the rim. After the Pirates expanded the lead to eight, the Johnnies engineered seven-straight points ending with a corner triple from Jailah Donald that was nothing but net to trim the deficit to one, 45-44. The home squad responded yet again as a conversion in the paint by Azana Baines, who led Seton Hall with 17 points and 13 rebounds, to make it a seven-point game, 53-46.
The resilient Red Storm answered the call with a long two-point jumper from Phoenix Gedeon, as the shot clock expired. Unique Drake buried a well-defended three-pointer to once again makje it a single-possession game, 53-51. Trailing by three in the final minute, Daye fed a pass to Mayo, who jacked up a triple that fell to tie the game at 57 with 0:34 to play. On the ensuing inbound, Baines dribbled the ball out of bounds and after a lengthy official review, the play was overturned and the Johnnies had the ball with 31.3 to play. The potential game-winning lay-up from Archer was batted away with 1.9 to play. After a missed heave by the Pirates, the two sides were headed to overtime tied at 57 after 40 minutes.
