St. John’s Gears Up for the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship

The Red Storm finished ninth at the conference championship meet last season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following two weeks of rest, the St. John's cross country team will head to Leesburg, Va. for the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship Presented by JEEP on Friday. The 6K race will begin at 10 a.m. at Morven Park.
The women's cross country championship will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Justin Corrigan on the call. Tickets can be found at BIGEAST.com.
The Red Storm last competed in the ECAC Championship at Van Cortlandt Park on Oct. 18. Two Johnnies posted personal best finishes in the meet.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo will look to continue her impressive freshman campaign at the conference cross country championship. The Spain native is most recently coming off a 33rd-place finish on a personal-best 6K mark of 21:51.8 at the ECAC Championship.
The BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week was previously named the Metropolitan Cross Country Individual Champion this season, posting a 17:45.7 finish in the 5K contest at Branch Brook Park.
Naiara Garcia and Brenin Mahon will also make their BIG EAST Championship debuts on Friday morning. Garcia last finished in 25th place at the Metropolitan Championships on Oct. 12, pacing the 5K in 19:33.58. Mahon is fresh off a collegiate-best 26:23.6 6K effort from the ECAC Cross Country Championship.
Ezgi Yasar will make her third conference championship appearance after registering a 60th-place result on a 22:28.6 finishing time at the ECAC Championship, two weeks ago.
Cristina Stanescu and Ana Dobsa will compete in the league championship meet for the second time in their Red Storm careers. Stanescu came in third on the Johnnies in the ECAC Championship with a 6K mark of 25:21.1. In her last time out, Dobsa put forth a 24th-place finish on a 19:26.72 effort at the Metropolitan Championship.
Last year, the Red Storm finished in ninth place at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship behind a 36th place effort from Claire Cushing. Yasar joined Cushing with a top 60 mark on a 23:00.76 pace.
