Red Storm to face the Greyhounds on the road for the first time ever
QUEENS, N.Y– The St. John's women's basketball team will continue its early season road swing on Wednesday night when it faces Loyola Maryland at Reitz Arena for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
The Red Storm will take on the Greyhounds in Baltimore for the first time ever. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jamie Watson and Taleah Dixon on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm began the 2024-25 campaign with a pair of double-digit victories last week over Saint Peter's and LIU. In the season opener, the Johnnies rolled past the Peacocks, 80-39, for their largest margin of victory since 2007. In its first road contest, the Red Storm captured a 67-50 win over LIU in Brooklyn.
Friday night's victory marked the 225th career win for Head Coach Joe Tartamella as four players finished in double-figures to down the Sharks in Brooklyn.
Through two games, the Red Storm have recorded 12 steals in back-to-back games for the first time in at least 15 years and have forced 49 turnovers. The squad boasts a turnover margin of plus-11.5, which ranks top-25 in the country.
Offensively, the Red Storm have shot efficiently from the floor to open the year at a 51.8% clip, which ranks 21st in the country. The Red Storm reserves are averaging 37.0 points per game off the bench, which ranks atop the BIG EAST and top-30 in NCAA Division I.
Senior guard Lashae Dwyer is off to a hot start in Queens wasting no time finding her shooting stroke. The Miami transfer is averaging 14.0 points per outing and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
Another transfer Kylie Lavelle from Penn State has found her scoring touch early as well. The 6-foot-2 forward has finished in double-figures in both contests and went for a team-high 15 points at LIU.
Tara Daye has filled up the box score averaging 7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. The junior recorded a career-high four steals and a game-high eight boards in her last appearance against the Sharks.
The Greyhounds are off to a 1-1 start to the year and are coming off a 54-46 win over UMBC on Sunday in their home opener. Loyola Maryland returns the bulk of its roster from 2023-24 campaign, welcoming back 88 percent of their scoring, 87 percent of their rebounding and 87 percent of their minutes from last year's squad that finished 16-15.
Under fourth-year Head Coach Danielle O'Banion, the Greyhounds were picked to finish first in the Patriot League, marking the first time in 20 years the program was selected as preseason favorites.
Three-time All-Patriot League selection and Preseason Player of the Year Lex Therien leads Loyola Maryland after averaging a double-double of 15.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game in 2023-24. The forward has recorded 10.5 points and 6.5 boards per contest in her first two appearances this season.
The two programs met for the first time ever last year at Carnesecca Arena with the Red Storm grabbing a wire-to-wire 71-49 victory. The Red Storm dished out 20 assists in the winning effort and Unique Drake led all scorers with 24 points.
Following Wednesday's matchup in Baltimore, the Johnnies will conclude their longest road stint of the season at Rhode Island on Sunday.
