St. John’s Shuts Down Stony Brook, 58-34

The Red Storm allowed just 34 points; lowest opponent total since Dec. 17, 2016
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team remained undefeated after playing lock down defense, allowing just 17 points over the final three quarters to cruise past Stony Brook, 58-34.
The Seawolves' 34 points was the lowest total by a Red Storm opponent since Dec. 17, 2016, when it defeated Wagner, 62-34. Today's defensive effort marked just the second time in the last decade it held an opponent to fewer than 35 points.
The Red Storm overcame an early deficit trailing by nine after the opening quarter and outscored Stony Brook 49-17 over the final three quarters in Queens. The Johnnies held Stony Brook to just 20 percent (7-35) shooting over the final 30 minutes of game action.
The Johnnies committed just five turnovers at Carnesecca Arena, its lowest team total since the 2018 BIG EAST Tournament, when it tallied only three giveaways on March 4, 2018 against Creighton.
Offensively, St. John's was balanced as seven players recorded six points or more on Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm dished out 13 assists on 27 made field goals. In three home games, the squad is averaging 17.0 helpers per game.
Lashae Dwyer and Ber'Nyah Mayo both finished with a game-high 10 points on Sunday. Mayo went 4-of-7 from the floor and logged a game-high plus-24. Dwyer finished in double-figures for the fifth time in six games and added four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win.
Phoenix Gedeon finished with a season-high eight points and Skye Owen chipped in nine points, four assists and three steals. Kylie Lavelle tallied a season-high eight boards and added six points.
After a slow start offensively in the opening few minutes, Donald drove to the rack for the first bucket of the game. Vanderhoop nailed a triple off a feed from Dwyer to make it 9-7. The Seawolves then spurred a 6-0 run continuing to keep the Red Storm in check offensively. Stony Brook held held a 17-9 advantage after 10 minutes, holding St. John's to 4-of-18 from field goal range.
The Red Storm came out hot to start the second frame orchestrating a 10-0 run to dissolve the Stony Brook lead. Owen began the run with a pull-up jumper and it concluded with a Lavelle lay-in at the rim tied the game at 17 and forced a Stony Brook timeout with 6:37 left in the half. Coming out of the timeout, Mayo grabbed a defensive board and threw a full-court pass to Dwyer, who shuffled her way past a Stony Brook defender and converted the highlight-reel lay-up to take St. John's first lead of the afternoon, 19-17. The Red Storm never looked back leading the rest of the way and Dwyer flushed final bucket of the half, swishing pull-up jumper in the paint, as the Johnnies took a 29-25 advantage into the locker room.
In the third stanza, Gedeon got two lay-ins in the paint to fall as part of a 12-2 run to open quarter. The Red Storm offense continued to flourish Dwyer made a sweet pass to Gedeon inside for the easy finish, marking her third bucket of the quarter to exceed her previous season-high. Vanderhoop splashed a mid-range jumper with 3:32 left in the third as the Red Storm lead grew to 14, 41-27. In the final 20 seconds of the third, Dwyer swiped a pass and took off to the other end sending one in through contact for an and one. After forcing another turnover, Owen cashed in on a mid-range as St. John's took a 16-point cushion into the final 10 minutes, 47-31. The Red Storm shot 64.3 percent (9-14) from the field during the third stanza.
The Red Storm defense continued to suffocate the Seawolves during the last 10 minutes, allowing a season-low three points in the fourth. Dwyer swung a pass to Owen in the corner, who knocked down the triple to give the Red Storm its largest lead to that point, 52-32. St. John's held Stony Brook scoreless for 6:08 and without a field goal for 9:57, dating back to the quarter. Jade Blagrove tallied the basket to give the Johnnies their largest lead of the day, 58-34, as they coasted to 6-0 on the year.
The Red Storm will close its three-game homestand on Thanksgiving Day when it hosts Harvard at 12 p.m. Admission into Carnesecca Arena will be free for all fans.
