Red Storm enter Thursday’s contest undefeated with a 6-0 record to start the year
QUEENS, N.Y.– The undefeated St. John's women's basketball team (6-0) will close its longest homestand of the season on Thanksgiving Day, when it welcomes RV Harvard (7-1) to Carnesecca Arena.
Admission for Thursday's contest is free for all fans as the Red Storm and Crimson will tip-off at 12 p.m. from Queens. Kevin Connelly and Jack Barteck will be on the call on FloSports.
The Red Storm remain undefeated six games into the year, defeating opponents by an average of 20.8 points per game. St. John's has started 6-0 in two of the last three seasons, including an unblemished 13-0 in 2022-23, the best start in program history.
The Red Storm defense has been among the best units in the country, holding the opposition to 46.3 points per game, which sits sixth-best in NCAA Division I. In Sunday's win over Stony Brook, 58-34, St. John's defense shined by allowing the lowest point total in a game since Dec. 17, 2016.
After trailing by nine through the first quarter, 17-9, the squad locked down the Seawolves, allowing just 17 points over the final 30 minutes. St. John's held Stony Brook to just nine points in the latter half, joining only Oregon and Illinois as the only teams to allow an NCAA Division I program to allowed single-digit scoring for entire half this season.
The Johnnies play a discipline brand of defense, ranking fourth in the nation in fewest fouls per game with 12.2. On the flip side, the Red Storm sits atop the country in free throw percentage, ranking 16th while shooting at a 79.1 percent clip.
St. John's has taken care of the basketball with 10.9 turnovers per game, good for ninth in NCAA Division I. On Sunday, the Red Storm committed just five giveaways, the program's lowest total since March 4, 2018, and ties for the third lowest single-game turnover total of any team in NCAA Division I this season.
Offensively, Lashae Dwyer continues to lead the Johnnies in the scoring department, averaging 13.8 points per game. The Red Storm have been balanced as six different players have finished in double-figures in multiple games this season. As a team, St. John's has shot 45.8 percent from field-goal range.
St. John's will play a game on Thanksgiving Day for the second-straight year after taking on VCU last season in Puerto Rico.
Harvard is off to a hot start to the 2024-25 campaign, logging a 7-1 overall record and wins over three power conference opponents – then-No. 25 Indiana, Boston College and Northwestern. The Crimson received one vote in the latest edition of the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
Entering the midweek slate on a five-game winning streak, Harvard will play its fourth game in six days when it meets the Johnnies in Queens. The Crimson will play the Red Storm's last opponent in Stony Brook on Long Island on Wednesday.
The Crimson is coming off a weekend sweep in the Midwest, taking down Northwestern and Illinois State on consecutive days.
Senior guard Harmoni Turner has proven herself as one of the top players in the country and currently ranks 11th in the country in scoring with 22.0 points per game, as of Tuesday.
The Mansfield, Texas native owns the highest single-game point total of any player in NCAA Division I this season, pouring in 41 in the team's win over Boston College. Three days later, she tallied a 38-point performance against Maine, which ranks tied for fourth-most and was tabbed the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Week.
St. John's and Harvard will meet for the fifth time, all in the last 15 years. The Red Storm carry a slight 3-1 edge in the series and have won all three games played in Queens. In their last meeting on March 19, 2017, the Johnnies outlasted the Crimson in the WNIT Second Round, 62-57.
Following the conclusion of the homestand, the Red Storm will hit the road to face undefeated Penn State on Monday, Dec. 2. The contest from the Bryce Jordan Center will tip-off at 7 p.m. and will air on the Big Ten Network.
