St. John’s Captures Road Win at LIU, 67-50

Head Joe Tartamella picked up his 225th career win
BROOKLYN, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team captured a road victory on Friday night taking down LIU, 67-50, at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn.
Four Johnnies finished in double-figures as the Red Storm picked up the win, which marked the 225th career victory for Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
For the second consecutive outing, the Red Storm collected 12 steals and forced its opponents into 20 turnovers or more.
Kylie Lavelle scored a team-high 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. The junior shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe and pulled down five boards.
Skye Owen had an efficient night in Brooklyn turning in 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. The junior went 2-of-3 from 3-point range and recorded three steals.
Lashae Dwyer continued her strong start in a St. John's uniform finishing with 12 points for her second-straight double-figure scoring outing to start the year. The Miami transfer is averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game through the first two contests.
All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection Ber'Nyah Mayo was the fourth player to finish in double-digits, totaling 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
The Red Storm bench added 31 points on Friday night in Brooklyn and through two contests the reserve unit is averaging 37.0 points per game.
Tara Daye was all over the place defensively tallying game-highs of eight rebounds and four steals. The four swipes marked a career-high for the junior and she finished the game with a plus-23.
The Red Storm started off hot from the floor, making its first three field goals to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. Dwyer and Phoenix Gedeon combined for team's first 12 points of the game jumping out to an eight-point advantage, 12-4. Toward the end of the first frame, the Sharks nailed a pair of 3-pointers to chop into the deficit and make it a three-point game, 18-15. Daye grabbed an offensive board and finished the second chance opportunity to give the Johnnies a five-point lead, 20-15, after the opening 10 minutes.
In the second stanza, Mayo wasted no time on the offensive end scoring five points over a 13-second span in the first 30 seconds of the quarter. LIU responded with a 9-3 spurt to make the scoreline, 28-24, with 4:39 left in the half. The Red Storm struck back with a 12-0 run of its own jumpstarted by Lavelle, who recorded nine points in the frame. The Johnnies took a 40-26 lead into the locker room.
In the third frame, LIU (0-2) cut its deficit to as few as six opening the third quarter with a 12-4 scoring stretch. Dwyer finished a pair of lay-ins before feeding Ariana Vanderhoop for a corner triple to grow the lead back to double-figures, 51-38. Lavelle logged a bucket in the paint to complete the 9-0 run. St. John's (2-0) went into the final frame in front, 55-40.
In the final quarter, Owen stole the show to put the game out of reach. The Staten Island product went for a solo 8-0 run and tallied a steal during that span to give the Johnnies their largest lead of the evening, 67-48, with 2:21 left on the clock. LIU record the final bucket of the game as the Red Storm move to 2-0 after the 67-50 victory on the road.
St. John's will continue its longest road swing of the season on Wednesday night when it faces Loyola Maryland in Baltimore. The contest from Reitz Arena will be streamed on ESPN+ at 7 p.m.
