St. John’s to Meet Penn State on Big Ten Network

Red Storm will face first road Big Ten opponent since 2017 on Monday night
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will face Penn State on Monday night on the Big Ten Network at 7 p.m.
The Red Storm will meet its first Big Ten opponent on the road since the 2017 season when takes on the Lady Lions at the Bryce Jordan Center. Ed Cohen and Megan McKeown will be on the call from University Park, Pa. The game will air on the Big Ten Network, which will also be streamed on FOXSports.com or the FOX Sports app.
St. John's suffered its first loss of the season on Thanksgiving Day, narrowly falling to RV Harvard, 54-52, at Carnesecca Arena. The contest went back-and-forth as St. John's built up as many as a 13-point cushion in the first half and a nine-point lead at the half. Harvard stormed back in the third frame outscoring the Red Storm, 29-11, to take a double-digit lead of its own. In the fourth, the Johnnies mounted a comeback and tied the game with just 0:07 to play. The Crimson's Harmoni Turner got the game-winner to go with just a single-second left on the clock to knock off St. John's for the first time this season.
The Johnnies contained a high-powered Harvard offense, particularly in the first half where it limited the Crimson to just 14 points and 23.3 percent shooting from the floor. The squad ranks first in the BIG EAST and fourth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense allowing just 47.1 points per game as of Dec. 1. The Red Storm have limited opponents to 55 points or less in six of its seven contests this season.
St. John's went 11-for-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line against Harvard. On the season, the squad is shooting 80.2 percent from the charity stripe, which ranks 14th in the country.
Lashae Dwyer is coming off another stellar performance tallying a team-high 18 points on Thanksgiving Day. The guard shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe and added six rebounds and four steals in the setback against Harvard. On the year, the Toronto native leads the team averaging 14.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game. The senior is shooting 84.0 from the free throw line, which ranks sixth-best in the BIG EAST.
All-BIG EAST Preseason selection Ber'Nyah Mayo has been making an impact as the floor general. The graduate student has scored in double-figures in three of her last four appearances and is shooting 91.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Red Storm junior Kylie Lavelle is logging 7.1 points and 4.4 rebounds off the bench. The Moosic, Pa., native will return to her former school after appearing in 28 games for Penn State last season.
Monday marks the third in the last four years the two programs have battled on the hardwood. St. John's will visit a Big Ten opponent on the road for the first time since March 23, 2017, when it fell at Michigan in the WNIT Quarterfinals. Penn State has won each of the previous two meetings in the series and captured a 69-53 victory in Queens last season on Nov. 16, 2023. Mayo recorded her 1,000th career point in that contest. In the first-ever meeting, the Lady Lions outlasted the Red Storm, 80-75, in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. On Nov. 26, 2021.
Penn State is one of 10 teams in the country to remain unbeaten through eight games. The Lady Lions hold an 8-0 record coming off their winningest season in a decade and advancing to the WBIT Semifinals. The squad has won 11 of its last 12 contests, dating back to last season.
The Lady Lions boast one of the most efficient offenses in the nation ranking 12th in scoring offense (87.4), fourth in assists per game (21.9) and eighth in field goal percentage (50.3%). In its last contest, Penn State outlasted Drexel in overtime, 86-78, on Wednesday.
Bellarmine transfer Gracie Merkle has been amongst the best post players in the country this season. The 6-foot-6 center is averaging 21.1 points and 9.5 boards per game. The redshirt sophomore ranks third in the country with five double-doubles and is shooting 64.5 percent from the field. Moriah Murray leads the nation with 36 made 3-pointers shooting at a 44.4 percent clip from beyond-the-arc.
