Five Players Finish in Double-Figures as St. John’s Surges Past Fairfield, 77-68

The Red Storm tally 10 wins in non-conference play for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y.– A balanced scoring attack led the St. John's women's basketball team to surge past Fairfield, 77-68, on Sunday afternoon.
For the first time since the 2010-11 campaign, the Red Storm record double-digit regular season non-conference victories after finishing out-of-league play with a 10-1 record.
Five Red Storm players finished in double-figures for the first time since the 77-61 win over DePaul on Feb. 11, 2023, as the Red Storm shot a season-high 56.5 percent from the field.
The Red Storm made eight 3-pointers for the second-straight game and shot 42.1 percent from beyond-the-arc. At the charity stripe, the Johnnies went 17-for-19 from the free throw at an impressive 89.5 percent clip.
The St. John's reserves outscored Fairfield's bench, 27-2, at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday.
Ber'Nyah Mayo netted a season-high 18 points and went 8-for-9 from the free throw line, including 5-for-6 in the final quarter.
Phoenix Gedeon flooded the box score tallying 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, seven boards, a season-high three assists and drew three charges.
Lashae Dwyer finished in double-figures for the seventh-straight game adding 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. The senior added four assists and four steals in Sunday's win.
Skye Owen chipped in 10 points all in the first half and shot 3-of-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from 3-point range.
Ariana Vanderhoop was the fifth and final Johnnie to finish in double-digits recording 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, her highest mark since the season opener against Saint Peter's on Nov. 4.
Fairfield's Kaety L'Amoreaux led all scorers on Sunday afternoon exploding for 30 points. Meghan Andersen added 17 points for the Stags, who fell to 6-3 on the year.
As tip-off commenced, Owen tallied the first five points for St. John's to open the game, including a corner triple off a feed from Jailah Donald. Dwyer added to the highlight reel with an up-and-under scooping lay-in through contact. Little drives to the right side and passes out to Gedeon, who fires an immediate skip pass to Vanderhoop for the open triple. Dwyer closed the opening frame with a turnaround jumper as the Red Storm held a 20-15 edge at the end of one. St. John's made eight of its first 10 field goal attempts shooting 80 percent in the first frame.
In the early minutes of the second, Gedeon played a pivotal role taking two charges and adding a pair of lay-in's as the Johnnies lead expanded to seven, 24-17. With just under six minutes left in the half, Vanderhoop slipped a no-look pass to Kylie Lavelle for the easy lay-in. Owen made her second triple of the afternoon as the Johnnies advantage rose to double-digits for the first, 35-24. Mayo nailed a 3-pointer as the Red Storm shot 5-for-10 from 3-point land in the first half and carried a 40-30 lead into the locker room.
In the third frame, the Red Storm engineered an 11-3 run in the middle of the frame to build its largest lead of the game, 54-41. The two sides continued to trade baskets as the Red Storm advantage hovered around 10. Dwyer banked in a 3-pointer on the Johnnies' final possession of the stanza giving them an 11-point cushion, 62-51, heading into the fourth.
Over the final 10 minutes, Fairfield climbed back within striking distance orchestrating a 7-0 spurt to cut the deficit to as few as six. Vanderhoop brought the run to a halt with a floater to ignite a 6-0 stretch for St. John's to carry the lead back to 12. Down the stretch, the Red Storm took care of business at the free throw line cashing in on nine of 10 attempts to seal the victory as the squad holds a 10-1 record heading into conference play.
The Red Storm will begin BIG EAST play on Saturday when it travels to Finneran Pavilion to face Villanova at 2 p.m.
