St. John’s to Begin BIG EAST Play at Villanova

Red Storm finished non-conference play with a 10-1 record
QUEENS, N.Y.– Following a 10-1 record in non-conference play, the St. John's women's basketball team will begin BIG EAST play on Saturday afternoon at Villanova.
The conference contest from Finneran Pavilion will tip-off at 2 p.m. Nick Mantegna and Harry Perretta will be on the call on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's wrapped up out-of-league competition with a 77-68 win over reigning MAAC Champion Fairfield on Sunday. The Red Storm are one of 21 teams in NCAA Division I to record double-digit non-conference victories as of Dec. 20 and it marked a program first since the 2010-11 campaign.
The Red Storm defense remains one of the premier units in the country, ranking fourth in scoring defense allowing just 50.0 points per game. Three of St. John's opponents recorded fewer than 40 points, seven tallied 50 or less and all 11 have been held under 70.
In the win over the Stags, the Johnnies shot a season-high 56.5 percent (26-46) from the field as five players finished in double-figures for the first time since Feb. 11, 2023. The Red Storm bench outscored Fairfield, 27-2 and the team shot a season-best 89.5 percent (17-19) from the charity stripe.
Ber'Nyah Mayo tallied a season-high 18 points and went 8-for-9 from the charity stripe in her last outing at Carnesecca Arena. Phoenix Gedeon filled up the box score with 11 points, seven boards, a season-high three assists and three drawn charges. Ariana Vanderhoop, Lashae Dwyer and Skye Owen also tallied double-digit scoring efforts.
Dwyer earned her fourth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the season in six possible weeks on Monday. The explosive senior continues to lead the charge, averaging a team-high 15.5 points and 3.2 per game. On the defensive end, the Toronto native has recorded 34 steals, which ranks first in the BIG EAST and 14th nationally.
St. John's has won three consecutive and four of the last five BIG EAST openers, dating back to 2019. The Red Storm and Villanova will open conference play against one another for the fourth time ever.
In the last meeting, St. John's welcomed the Wildcats in its return to Madison Square Garden on Dec. 16, 2023, snapping a nine-game losing streak against its conference foe in a low-scoring affair, 51-46. Jillian Archer went for 15 points and 14 boards and Jailah Donald nailed a crucial 3-pointer in the closing minutes. The Johnnies held Villanova without a made field goal for the final 7:05 to start off conference play with a victory. St. John's is seeking its first win at Finneran Pavilion since Feb. 22, 2019.
Villanova enters league competition with an even 6-6 record on the year after a tumultuous non-conference schedule that featured 10 games against NET Top-100 teams. The Wildcats have played in seven games decided by 10 or fewer points.
The Wildcats are led by freshman Jasmine Bascoe, who is averaging 14.8 points per game. The rookie leads the BIG EAST in assists (53) and free throw percentage (90.2%). The Milton, Ontario native was named the conference's rookie of the week on Dec. 2. Maddie Webber is also averaging double-figures, scoring 13.2 points per contests.
Following the Christmas holiday, the Johnnies will be back in action at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 on FOX against Creighton.
