St. John’s Sweeps UMass Lowell and Charleston Southern

The Red Storm defeated the River Hawks, 6-3, before taking down the Buccaneers, 4-2
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The St. John's softball team (2-5) swept day one of the CSU Blue / Gold Classic as it defeated UMass Lowell (1-4), 6-3, before taking down Charleston Southern (3-4), 4-2, on Friday.
Red Storm shortstop London Jarrard hammered St. John's first home run of the season against UMass Lowell as she finished the day with four RBIs.
Sophomore Loreley Francia was terrific in the circle this afternoon, tossing a combined eight innings. The Spring, Texas native pitched the final 2.1 innings against the River Hawks to earn the save before securing the win against the Buccaneers by throwing 5.2 innings, surrendering just two earned runs on three hits.
Elanna Lysiak and Cassidy Stouffer provided a spark for the Red Storm offense at the bottom of the lineup. Lysiak went 2-for-5 with a double on the afternoon, while Stouffer posted a 4-for-6 showing with an RBI double in two games. The pair combined to score five runs across the two games.
Game 1
The River Hawks put an early run on the board in the first inning after Elizabeth Frederick smacked a leadoff double before scoring on a single by Lea White. St. John's catcher Celia Macari caught White stealing second to end the frame and kept the UMass Lowell lead at one.
After a scoreless home half, Carolina Zamudio found her groove as she struck out two batters in the top of the second to hold the score at 1-0.
The Red Storm put together a two-out rally after the first two batters were retired to start the bottom of the second. Lysiak reached on an error and advanced to third on a Stouffer single to right field. The Johnnies capitalized on another River Hawks' miscue and knotted the score at one, seeing Lysiak come around to score. With two runners on, Jarrard came to the plate and blasted the first Red Storm home run of the season to take the lead, 4-1.
St John's Zamudio and UMass Lowell's Gianna LaCedra settled in as both pitchers tossed a scoreless third and fourth inning.
In the fifth frame, Jess Bianco made an outstanding full-extension diving catch at the warning track in right-center to record the second out of the inning. UMass Lowell manufactured a two-out rally of its own as Cayla Tulley hit a two-RBI single to trim the Johnnies' lead, 4-3.
St. John's threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, however, the River Hawks induced a double play to leave the inning unscathed.
The Johnnies' offense added insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Lysiak doubled to left center and scored on a fielder's choice. Stouffer then came across the plate on an error to reclaim a the three-run advantage, 6-3.
Francia closed out the final 2.1 innings by surrendering just one hit and sitting the River Hawks down 1-2-3 in the sixth and seventh to record the save, giving St. John's a 6-3 victory.
Game 2
Francia drew the start in game two after closing out game one and immediately engaged in a pitchers' duel with Charleston Southern's Annah Junge. The two pitchers tossed a pair of scoreless innings to start the game.
In the top of the third, Katie Whittaker led off the frame with a single down the left field line, followed by singles from Stouffer and Jarrard to load the bases with two outs. Junge worked out of trouble and kept the game scoreless through three.
Amy Mallah sparked the Red Storm offense in the top of the fourth, singling up the middle and scoring on a Sydney Totarsky double to left center for a 1-0 lead. A batter later, Whittaker rocketed a single up the middle and swiped second as Totarsky came into score on the steal, 2-0. Stouffer capped the inning by drilling a double down the left-field line and increased the Johnnies' advantage to 3-0.
Francia continued to deal, shutting down the Buccaneers' offense in the fourth and fifth innings with three strikeouts and preserving the 3-0 lead into the sixth inning.
The Red Storm went down in order in the top of the sixth, before Charleston Southern's Carsten Sandvig hit a solo home run to end the shutout, 3-1. The Buccaneers followed up with back-to-back doubles as they cut into the Johnnies lead, 3-2.
In the top of the seventh, Lysiak walked before Stouffer's third hit put runners on first and second with no outs. After both runners advanced on a sac bunt, Jarrard tacked on another run with a groundout to second and padded St. John's lead, 4-2.
Hannah Mearns shut the door on the Buccaneers in the bottom half, allowing just one base runner and securing the 4-2 victory.
The Red Storm will be back in action tomorrow when they take on UMass Lowell at 12:30 p.m. followed by Charleston Southern at 5 p.m.
