St. John’s Heads to Charleston for CSU Gold / Blue Classic

Red Storm will play five games in three days for second consecutive weekend
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The St. John's softball team (0-5) is set to compete in the CSU Blue / Gold Classic where the squad will play five games in three days against the UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-3) and Charleston Southern Buccaneers (3-3).
The Johnnies will open play on Friday starting at 12:30 p.m. against UMass Lowell directly followed by a tilt with Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. On Saturday, St. John's will play the River Hawks once again at 12:30 p.m. with the first pitch against the Buccaneers slated for 5 p.m. Play will conclude with a third and final matchup versus UMass Lowell at 10 a.m. on Sunday
Both games against Charleston Southern will be broadcast on ESPN+. Live stat and broadcast information for the other games will be posted on RedStormSports.com when it becomes available.
The Red Storm opened their 2024 season at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. last weekend. In the opening game, St. John's battled RV Liberty to the end as the score was knotted at one heading into the seventh before the Flames sealed a 3-1 victory with a two-run walk-off home run. After dropping the nightcap to Kansas, the Johnnies gave it their all on Saturday despite falling to Central Arkansas, 4-1, and South Alabama, 3-2. St. John's wrapped up the tournament against NC State on Sunday where the Wolfpack secured an 9-1 victory.
London Jarrard reached a milestone in her career as she tallied her 100th career hit against NC State. In the first inning of Sunday's contest, Jarrard smacked a triple to the center field wall for her 100th base knock. The Carlsbad, Calif. native reached the mark in just 271 career at-bats as she boasts a .366 career average.
Hannah Mearns was named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament team for her efforts in the circle during the opening weekend. The senior tossed two complete games in both of her starts against RV Liberty and South Alabama. Mearns held a 2.74 ERA across 15.1 innings and totaled eight strikeouts.
Anese Thompson and Sydney Totarsky led the St. John's offense as both finished the weekend with a .333 average. Thompson reached base safely in all five games of the weekend recording four hits, three walks and a hit by pitch. Totarsky returned to where it all began in her home state as the Cooper City, Fla. native finished the weekend with a team-high five hits. Thompson and Totarsky combined to drive home four of the six Red Storm runs over the weekend.
UMass Lowell enters this weekend with a 1-3 mark on the season. The River Hawks opened up 2024 by splitting two games against Texas Southern and dropping games to Quinnipiac and Texas A&M Commerce.
Freshman Isabel Quintanilla was named America East Rookie of the Week for tallying three hits, three RBIs, two runs scored and a .563 on-base percentage. Last season, UMass Lowell finished with a 23-29-1 record that included an opening-round win against Bryant in the conference tournament. All-America East First Team selection Morgan Fisher returns to the River Hawks after slashing .329/.375/.463 with 49 hits and three home runs.
St. John's and UMass Lowell have met four previous times as the River Hawks lead the series 3-1. The two teams last met on Feb. 12, 2022, as the Red Storm fell, 5-2, despite a six-strikeout performance by Carolina Zamudio across five innings.
Charleston Southern begins the weekend with an even 3-3 record. The Buccaneers dropped their opening game to East Carolina before hosting the CSU Kickoff Tournament. In the tournament, Charleston Southern won two games against Saint Francis, split a pair with Bellarmine and fell to Siena.
Graduate student Annah Junge returns to the circle for the Bucs as she eclipsed the 400-strikeout mark for her career on Feb. 9. Last season, Charleston Southern finished fourth in the Big South with a 22-27 overall mark but fell in the opening round of the conference tournament to end its season.
The Red Storm leads the all-time series against the Buccaneers, 4-1. The two programs last met at the Georgia Softball Classic in 2010 when the Johnnies won 5-2 behind a complete game, seven-strikeout effort from Linzee Sumrall.
After this weekend, St. John's will head to California to play nine games throughout spring break. The Johnnies will start competition against Northern Colorado (Feb. 25), followed by matchups with UC San Diego (Feb. 27) and UC Riverside (Feb. 28). Competition in the Golden State will wrap up at the Lancers Invite (March 1-3) hosted by California Baptist.
