QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2024) – Fresh off a 1-0 weekend at then-No. 2 Florida, the St. John's baseball team will look to ride its recent success into its three-game set with Houston, beginning on Friday inside Schroeder Park at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Saturday's contest is also slated for 7:30 p.m. ET, while Sunday's start time is set for 2 p.m. ET. All three games will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's took down No. 2/2 Florida, 9-5, in its lone game last weekend. The win marked the highest ranked victory since knocking off No. 1 Virginia, 6-5, in the NCAA Tournament at the Charlottesville Regional on June 6, 2010. The victory was also the highest regular-season win in program history.
Reliever Ben Adams secured BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week following three shutout innings of work, allowing just two hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore catcher Jimmy Keenan also scored a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection after a 2-for-4 day at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
The Johnnies and Houston enter Friday's contest undefeated, being two of 38 teams in NCAA Division I that open play this weekend with an unblemished record.
St. John's and Houston will meet for the first time in program history when the two teams square off on Friday. The Red Storm is 56-48 against current Big 12 schools. In their last meeting against a Big 12 foe, the Johnnies swept Kansas on March 13-15, 2019, at Jack Kaiser Stadium. It was the program's first sweep over a power five conference that never once counted itself as a member of the BIG EAST. Joe La Sorsa secured BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week after a complete-game, one-run outing with seven strikeouts.
The Cougars are 4-0 to start the 2024 season, most recently taking down Praire View A&M, 27-1, on Tuesday. Seven players recorded multi-RBI games, including shortstop Jake Rainess and catcher Jonathan French with four apiece. Houston's 27 runs at home were a team and stadium record for runs scored at Schroeder Park. Houston also swept Binghampton over the weekend, allowing just six runs in three games.
Through four contests, the Cougars are among the nation's best with a 1.00 ERA (2nd), a 5.9 K/BB ratio (8th in NCAA) and a 13.2 K/9 (9th). Offensively, Houston is also producing 12.5 runs per game, good for 12th in Division I.
First baseman Justin Murray and Rainess were named NCBWA Preseason All-Americans. Murray was named Second Team utilityman while Rainess was tabbed Third Team shortstop. Both players earned top 50 position rankings by D1Baseball, seeing Rainess named the 13th-best shortstop in America (fourth in the Big 12) while Murray was listed at No. 22 for first basemen.
Rainess and Tre Jones will cause problems on the base paths for the Red Storm, each logging four stolen bases apiece (9th in NCAA).
The Red Storm will also wrap up its 10-game road trip in the Lonestar State, taking on the University of Texas on Tuesday before traveling to Sam Houston State for a three-game slate the following weekend.
Saturday's contest is also slated for 7:30 p.m. ET, while Sunday's start time is set for 2 p.m. ET. All three games will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
