Red Storm picks up its 10th win of 2024
QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 52 St. John's men's tennis team picked up its 10th win of 2024 on Friday against Drexel, 4-2.
In its first match since receiving its highest national ranking since 2016, St. John's (10-2) won four matches in singles play to earn its second victory in a row.
In doubles play, Leon Petko and Ignacio Vinas picked up their seventh win as a pair, taking down Egor Kirakosov and Alessio Azzalini on the No. 2 court, 6-3. The Dragons won the next two matches in doubles play to claim the team point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play, Ryota Kaneda won his team-leading 10th singles match of the season, earning a straight-sets decision over Josue Guzman, 6-1, 6-1, knotting the match's score at one. Armando Sotelo gave the Johnnies their first lead of the day, defeating Azzalini on the No. 5 court, 6-2, 6-1.
Former BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Carl Gustavsson earned the third point of the day for the Red Storm, beating Alex Sousa, 6-2, 6-4 for his eighth win in singles play this season.
Leonardo Mileikowsky recorded the match-clinching fourth point for the Johnnies on the No. 3 court, getting the better of Hussein Tawil in a back-and-forth three-set affair. After dropping the first set, 6-7, Mileikowsky evened the match at one by taking the second frame, 6-2 and dominated the winner-take-all third set, 6-3.
The Red Storm will return to action next week in the Lone Star State for a pair of matches. On Wednesday, the Johnnies will faceoff with No. 10 Texas in Austin at 6 p.m. Two days later, St. John's will be in San Antonio for a 4 p.m. showdown with Trinity.
