Red Storm clinch a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team locked down defensively and coasted to a victory over Providence, 60-42, at Carnesecca Arena.
With the win, the Red Storm have clinched a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament and earn its ninth top-five league finish in 12 seasons under Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
The Red Storm locked down defensively allowing just 14 first half points, its fewest against a BIG EAST opponent since it allowed 14 in a Feb. 11, 2022 in a 79-45 win over Georgetown. Today's game marked the third time St. John's have held a BIG EAST opponent to 42 points, all three games finished with an exact score line of 60-42.
Providence (12-17, 6-10 BIG EAST) was held to 32.7 percent (16-49) shooting from the field and 26.7 percent (4-15) from 3-point range.
Four Red Storm players finished in double-figures in a total team effort offensively and all seven players that played significant minutes finished with five points or more. The Johnnies went 8-for-17 (47.1%) from 3-point range in Saturday's win.
Jailah Donald finished with a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds and tied her personal best with three made 3-pointers.
Jillian Archer nearly finished with a double-double and tallied double-figures in scoring for the 11th consecutive game. The graduate student registered 10 points and nine rebounds.
Unique Drake made her 143rd appearance in her final regular season home game for the Red Storm and ended the contest with 10 points and four assists.
Ber'Nyah Mayo finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals. With a lay-up at the end of the second quarter, she became the first player since all-time leading scorer Aliyyah Handford in 2015-16 to record at least 300 points, 100 assists and 50 steals in a single-season.
Prior to the game, Archer, Drake along with graduate assistants Danielle Patterson and Mackenzie Shanklin and student managers- Stephenie Cummins, Tahj Johnson, Willie Rosales and William Terrell were honored before their game to their contributions to the program.
Archer drained a mid-range jumper in the middle of the opening frame. Owen rose up for a mid-range jumper to finish out a 6-0 run and give the Johnnies a 12-5 lead at the break. The Red Storm held Providence to just 20 percent shooting in the first quarter and forced five turnovers.
In the second stanza, the Johnnies began to get it going offensively as Drake buried a wide-open triple on a kick-out from Phoenix Gedeon. The Friars trimmed the deficit to five, 19-14, with 4:29 remaining in the half. The Red Storm went onto hold the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the second quarter and erupt on a 12-0 run to end the half. Archer got it started with a putback before Donald knocked down a pair of triples. Mayo scooped in a lay-in to cap off the dominant stretch and carry a 31-14 advantage into the break.
In the third frame, Providence began to chip into the lead starting off with a triple from Nariah Scott. Drake responded with a 3-pointer of her own to expand the advantage back to 17, 34-17. The Friars proceeded to score 11 of the game's next 13 points cutting the deficit to just eight. The sophomores came up huge with a pair of triples from Owen and Donald to bring the advantage back to 14. Grace Efosa drained a shot from near halfcourt to make it 42-31 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, St. John's (16-13, 10-7 BIG EAST) expanded its lead courtesy of a pair of made 3-pointers from Mayo. Gedeon flushed her second mid-range jumper of the afternoon to balloon he advantage to the Johnnies' largest of the day, 58-40. The Red Storm coasted the rest of the way to a Senior Day victory and double-digit BIG EAST wins for the second-straight year.
The Johnnies will gear up for their regular season finale on Tuesday night when they face Marquette in Milwaukee at 8:30 p.m. on FS1.
