Redshirt senior Ben Beauchamp logs career-high three RBIs on Tuesday
Redshirt senior Ben Beauchamp registered a career-high three RBIs while going 2-for-4 on the evening. Catcher Jimmy Keenan also smacked a pair of doubles to go with two runs and an RBI on Tuesday.
The Johnnies ended the Longhorns' streak of 28.2 scoreless innings in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead. The Red Storm capitalized on a fielding miscue and a pair of free bases to Blake Mayberry and Chad Falcon before Keenan roped a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Garrett Scavelli from third to take the early advantage.
After a blank bottom of the first, the Red Storm threatened the No. 15 team in the country again in the second. Luke Orbon and Anthony Brienza smacked back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on the corners. Brienza swiped second in the ensuing at-bat, but the Longhorns worked out of the jam to keep the Red Storm lead at one.
Texas retaliated with two runs in the bottom of the second, scoring both on Will Gasparino's single with the second tally crossing on a Red Storm error.
The momentum swung back in the Johnnies' favor in the top of the third, putting a two-spot on the board. Falcon worked a one-out walk before advancing to third on a Keenan double to straightaway center field. Beauchamp turned on the first pitch he saw and roped it down the left-field line for a two-run double, giving St. John's a 3-2 edge.
However, the Longhorns exploded for a five-run bottom of the fourth, four of which came on a grand slam from Jalin Flores, to take a 7-3 lead.
St. John's chipped away at its deficit in the away half of the fifth. After a two-out double by Keenan, Beauchamp delivered again with an RBI single to right-center, pulling the Red Storm within three, 7-4.
It was all Texas from that point forward, scoring three in the fifth frame and five more in the seventh before closing the door in the ninth to secure its 11-run win.
The Red Storm will wrap up its 10-game road trip with three contests against Sam Houston, beginning on Friday. First pitch from Don Sanders Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
