Red Storm picks up its fifth sweep of 2024
SAN ANTONIO – The No. 55 St. John's men's tennis team blanked Division-III's Trinity (Tx.), 7-0, on Friday night in San Antonio.
The Red Storm (11-3) won the team doubles point and all six matches in singles play to earn the win in the first all-time meeting between the two programs.
Francisco Bascon and Leonardo Mileikowsky set the tone in doubles play, claiming an 8-3 victory over Aashish Dhanani and Eric Liao on the No. 1 court. Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda clinched the point for the Johnnies, taking down Rafa Candelas and Jared Perry, 8-6. It was the first win of the season for Groves and Kaneda as a pair.
Groves picked up the second point for the Johnnies, beating Liao on the No. 6 singles court, 6-1, 6-2, for his first singles win of the season. Mileikowsky gave the Red Storm a 3-0 lead on the No. 3 court, earning a straight-set victory over Candelas, 6-3, 6-4.
The lead was pushed to 4-0 on the No. 2 court as Ignacio Vinas picked up his second singles decision of the year, taking down Rob Chang, 6-4, 7(9)-6(7). Armando Sotelo gave the Johnnies a 5-0 advantage on the No 5 court, grabbing a hard-fought straight-set win over Dhanani 7(9)-6(7), 6-4.
Carl Gustavsson's ninth singles win of the season gave the Red Storm a 6-0 after he got the better of Perry, 7(7)-6(4), 7-6. Kaneda picked up his team-best ninth singles victory of the season on the No. 4 court, taking down Connor Whittington in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, to finish off the sweep for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm will be back in action on March 6 back in Queens to kick off BIG EAST play against Creighton. First serve from the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
