Red Storm improves to 12-3 in 2024
The No. 60 St. John's men's tennis team defeated Creighton, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y.
With the win, the Red Storm improves to 12-3 overall this season and 1-0 in conference play. Creighton falls to 7-6 with the loss.
In the first meeting between the two BIG EAST foes since 2014, the Johnnies won the first two doubles matches to claim the team point against the Bluejays before emerging victorious in four singles matches to clinch the contest.
In doubles play, former BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week, Leon Petko and Ignacio Vinas competed on the No. 1 court for the first time this season and earned a 6-3 decision over Matthew Lanahan and Kirtan Patel. Martin Bugaj and Armando Sotelo clinched the team doubles point for the Red Storm on the No. 3 court, defeating Yuma Daijima and Alejandro Gandini, 6-4.
Sotelo gave St. John's a 2-0 lead on the No. 6 singles court after taking down Daijima in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
The lead was pushed to 3-0 on the No. 4 court when Danilo Raicevic engineered a come-from-behind victory against Gandini. After dropping the opening set, 3-6, Raicevic responded by taking the final two frames, 6-2, 6-2, to win the match.
Carl Gustavsson improved to 3-0 on the No. 1 singles court in 2024, defeating Lanahan, 7-5, 7-6 (10-6), giving the Johnnies a 4-0 advantage. The win marked the 10th singles victory of the season for the junior.
After Creighton earned its first point of the match on the No. 2 court, Ryota Kaneda picked up his team-leading 12th singles win of the season for the Johnnies, coming back to defeat Shin Inoue in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Red Storm will be off for two weeks but will return to action on March 20 to face No. 55 Yale. First serve from the Cullman-Hyman Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn., is set for 5 p.m.
