Red Storm to face its first of four BIG EAST opponents this season
Following a pair of matches last week in the Lone Star State against No. 10 Texas and Trinity, the No. 60 St. John's men's tennis team will return to Queens on Wednesday for a matchup with BIG EAST foe Creighton. First serve in the Red Storm's first conference contest of 2024 is set for 1 p.m. at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (11-3) was defeated by the Longhorns, 7-0, last Wednesday before taking care of business against Trinity on Friday in San Antonio, 7-0.
Ryota Kaneda leads the Johnnies in singles play this season with 11 wins. Carl Gustavsson and Leonardo Mileikowsky have 17 combined singles wins and have each been named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week this season. Through 14 matches in 2024, Danilo Raicevic has a 7-1 singles record.
In doubles action, Ignacio Vinas and Leon Petko have won seven matches as a pair while Mileikowsky and Francisco Bascón have teamed up for four victories.
The Red Storm and the Bluejays will faceoff for the first time since 2014 and just the second time ever. When the programs last met, the Red Storm earned a 6-1 decision in Omaha, Neb., on April 3, 2014.
Creighton enters Wednesday's match 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in BIG EAST play. The Bluejays have lost two straight contests, falling to Omaha on the road on Feb. 24, 4-3, before losing at Georgetown on Monday, 6-1. Creighton previously picked up a BIG EAST win on the road against DePaul on Jan. 27, 4-3.
Following the contest against Creighton, St. John's will have two weeks off before returning to action on March 20 on the road against No. 55 Yale. First serve from the Cullman-Hyman Tennis Center in West Haven, Conn., is set for 5 p.m.
