FS1 will carry Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup between the Red Storm and Pirates at 2:30 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. – Riding a five-game winning streak, the fifth-seeded St. John's men's basketball team (19-12) will look to carry its momentum into the BIG EAST Tournament when the Johnnies face fourth-seeded Seton Hall (20-11) in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Tip-off at Madison Square Garden is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
FS1 will cover all four BIG EAST quarterfinal matchups, including the showdown between the Red Storm and Pirates in Midtown. FOX Sports announcers Tim Brando and Jim Jackson will call the action while Kristina Pink will report from the sideline. An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 138 or 201 and the SiriusXM App.
The Johnnies won 19 games during the regular season, including 11 BIG EAST victories, which are the most for the program since earning 12 during the 2010-11 season. Eight of the Red Storm's 11 league wins came by double-digit margins with five victories by 15 points or more. For the eighth time in program history, St. John's enters the BIG EAST Championship Presented by Jeep as the No. 5 seed.
St. John's win streak began on Feb. 21 with a victory at Georgetown and since then it has outscored opponents by a 15.4-point margin in the last five contests. Over the win streak, the Red Storm averaged 88.4 points per contest, shooting 53.3 percent (169-317 FG) from the floor, including 58.0 percent (134-231 FG) inside the arc. All-BIG EAST Second Team selection Daniss Jenkins has also led the Red Storm with 16.4 points per game, knocking down 56.1 percent (32-57 FG) of his shots and dishing out 5.8 assists per game.
St. John's and Seton Hall will square off for just the fifth time in the BIG EAST Tournament after splitting their previous four meetings. The teams last met in the 2021 edition of the conference's marquee event with the Pirates outlasting the Red Storm, 77-69, in overtime on March 11, 2021. A win over the Pirates on Thursday would punch the Johnnies' ticket to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2000.
Earlier this season, the Red Storm dropped its two regular season meetings against the Pirates. In the first contest on Jan. 16, St. John's fell 80-65 at Prudental Center in Newark, as the team was without its Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino and starter Jordan Dingle, who both missed the contest due to illness. Just over a month later, the Johnnies surrendered a 19-point lead at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y., eventually dropping a 68-62 decision.
Thursday's contest will mark the 113th all-time meeting between the original members of the BIG EAST. The Johnnies hold a 62-50 edge over the Pirates in the all-time series that began in 1909.
Seton Hall has won five of its last seven games with its two losses during the stretch coming on the road at Creighton (Feb. 28) and Connecticut (March 3). The Pirates recently defeated DePaul, 86-62, on Saturday in the team's regular season finale at the Prudential Center. Dre Davis scored a game-high 28 points, hitting 10-of-15 shot attempts with four 3-pointers. Dylan Addae-Wusu had 19 points with three triples in the victory.
The winner of Thursday's matchup will advance to the semifinals on Friday, taking on the winner of top-seeded UConn and either No. 8 Butler or No. 9 Xavier. Tip-off for the first semifinal is set for 5:30 p.m. and will air on FOX.
