St. John’s Earns 4-3 Victory Over No. 75 Monmouth

The Red Storm picked up its first win over a ranked opponent this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over No. 75 Monmouth on Wednesday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm (13-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) won the first two doubles matches to claim the team point and took three singles matches to finish off its first win over a ranked opponent this season. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets.
Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves started things off for the Johnnies, defeating Gabriel Busato and Christof Zeiler on the No. 3 doubles court, 6-1. Leonardo Mileikowsky and Carl Gustavsson closed out doubles play on the No. 1 court, taking down Mateo Bivol and Alex Martinez Sanz, 6-3, clinching the doubles point for St. John's.
Kaneda gave the Red Storm its second point of the match, earning a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Zeiler on the No. 6 court. The win was Kaneda's 13th of the year in singles play, which leads the team.
The Johnnies took a 3-0 lead on the No. 5 court when Danilo Raicevic picked up his ninth singles victory of the season, defeating Busato, 7-5, 6-4. Raicevic is 4-0 in 2024 in the fifth singles position.
Monmouth tied the match at three after claiming wins on the No. 4, 2 and 1 courts.
On the No. 3 court, Ignacio Vinas clinched the victory for the Johnnies after a three-set battle with Gabriel Berner. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Vinas rallied to take the final two frames, 6-1, 6-0 to earn the match-clinching fourth point for the home squad.
With the victory, the Red Storm improved to 3-2 all-time against Monmouth and has won the past two meetings against the Hawks.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday for a BIG EAST tilt with Villanova. Start time in Villanova, Pa., will be announced in the coming days.
