Red Storm has won six straight conference games dating back to last season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Unbeaten in its last seven games, the St. John's baseball team will look to stay hot as it heads to UConn for a three-game set beginning on Friday. First pitch from Elliot Ballpark is slated for 6:05 p.m.
The Johnnies (22-5-1, 3-0) and Huskies (14-16, 2-1) will meet again on Saturday for a 2:05 p.m. showdown, followed by a 1:05 p.m. matchup on Sunday. FloSports will carry the weekend series from Storrs, Conn., and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm, who is 19-1-1 over its last 21 games, is coming off a three-game sweep of Villanova. The three wins over the Wildcats marked their sixth straight victory against a league opponent dating back to last season after St. John's ended the 2023 campaign with a trio of wins at Butler. The Johnnies slashed .299/.395/.433 against the Wildcats, averaging 9.0 runs per game.
St. John's bullpen shined in three games in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., with a 1.84 ERA and 21 of the team's 29 strikeouts across 14.1 innings. BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection Jed Boyle and Kyle Chase combined for 12 punchouts and three hits allowed in their 6.2 frames of work.
The Red Storm is 6-0-1 over its last seven games, seeing a balance both on the mound and at the dish. The Red Storm pitching staff has been lethal since taking down Fordham on March 25, posting a 2.86 ERA with 65 strikeouts across 63.0 innings of work. The opposition is also hitting just .211 against the Red Storm.
Jackson Tucker has stood out recently, slashing .419/.586/.650 with a team-best 13 hits, 12 runs scored and 11 RBIs during the team's seven-game stretch. The Staten Island native is also a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen base opportunities and has reached base safely in 17 straight games. Fellow outfielder Ben Beauchamp is the only player with a higher such streak, reaching safely in 20 consecutive contests.
St. John's and UConn will square off for the 127th time when both teams meet on Friday. Connecticut holds a slight 65-61 advantage over the Red Storm. The Johnnies had the last laugh in last year's final meeting, earning a 9-7 victory on April 8, 2023. Luke Orbon went 3-for-5 in the contest with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Red Storm will look for its first win at Elliot Ballpark since James Lomangino helped the Johnnies to a 3-0 victory behind a seven-inning, seven-strikeout performance on April 3, 2013. St. John's will also try to secure its first series win in Storrs since April 24-26, 2009, when they swept the Huskies.
UConn enters the three-game slate having won four straight contests after taking two of three against Xavier last weekend and earning decisive midweek victories over Bryant and Maine.
The Huskies lead the BIG EAST with a 2.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio while ranking second with a 9.5 K/9 mark this season. Braden Quinn has been a force out of the bullpen, making 14 appearances with a 1.29 ERA and 35 punchouts across 21.0 innings of work.
Leaning on its returners heavily, graduate student Paul Tammaro paces the team with a .306 batting average and 21 runs scored. Jake Studley and Luke Broadhurst have smacked six home runs apiece while the latter leads the squad with 23 RBIs.
