St. John’s Readies for the UConn Northeast Challenge

The Red Storm will travel to Connecticut for the first time this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – After amassing 19 top-five finishes in split action last weekend between Coral Gables, Fla., and Icahn Stadium, the St. John's track & field team will travel to Storrs, Conn., for the UConn Northeast Challenge on Friday and Saturday. UConn's home meet will kick off on Friday at noon and conclude on Saturday.
The Red Storm will head to Connecticut for the first time this season and will compete in UConn's home meet for the second consecutive year.
At UConn last season, Jamora Alves, Chinenye Onuorah and the St. John's relay squad all earned top-three finishes in the shot put, the 400-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay.
The Johnnies engineered an impressive showing at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships last weekend, compiling 173 points for second place overall. The Red Storm took home three wins in the shot put, the discus and the triple jump.
The St. John's throw squad excelled in all three events at the Icahn Stadium. Juliet Smith claimed the top podium spot in the shot put with a 13.05-meter throw. Desiree Pagan finished in fifth in the shot put and rung up a first-place finish in the discus with a heave of 40.22 meters. Martina De Buglio secured second place in the hammer throw with a personal-best 48.84-meter toss.
Fia Viklund nabbed a gold medal in the triple jump after registering a collegiate-best leap of 11.54 meters.
In the 100-meter dash, Ava Mabry-Spencer continued her hot performances on the track, securing a 12.53-second mark for third place.
In her event debut, Gabriella Caronia finished the 5,000-meter run in 17:51.17 for third place overall.
Onuorah continued her spectacular junior campaign by posting a BIG EAST leading time in the 400-meter run last Saturday at Miami's Hurricane Alumni Invitational. The Thailand native logged a 54.28-second finishing time for seventh place in the race.
Claire Cushing put forth an impressive fourth-place effort in the 1,500-meter run in Coral Gables, Fla. The graduate student paced the event in 4:34.49.
Following this weekend's trip to UConn, the Red Storm will split up yet again for Yale's Mark Young Invitational in New Haven, Conn., and the UVA Invite in Charlottesville, Va.
