No. 1 St. John’s to Face No. 8 Marquette in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals

The Red Storm will face the Golden Eagles on Friday at 9 a.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 17, 2024) – The No. 1 seed St. John's men's tennis team will take on Marquette on Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP.
First serve in the second matchup of the year between the Red Storm and the Golden Eagles is set for 9 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
The Johnnies, looking for their second BIG EAST Championship in as many seasons, took down Marquette, 7-0 on April 6 at the St. John's Outdoor Courts.
The Johnnies took the team doubles point against the Golden Eagles behind a dominant 6-1 performance by Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda on the No. 3 court. Armando Sotelo and Martin Bugaj also were victorious to claim the team point for the Red Storm.
St. John's won all six matches in singles action. Bugaj, Francisco Bascon, Carl Gustavsson, Ignacio Vinas, Leonardo Mileikowsky and Groves each picked up wins against Marquette.
St. John's concluded the regular season with a 19-4 overall record and won all four of its BIG EAST matchups. The Red Storm picked up wins over No. 75 Yale, Penn State and Dartmouth. Three of the squad's four losses came against ranked opponents. The Johnnies ended the regular season on a seven-match winning streak.
Kaneda has paced the Red Storm this season. The junior won a team-best 17 singles matches and finished 8-2 in doubles play alongside sophomore Groves. Gustavsson finished with a combined 21 victories this season while Danilo Raicevic earned a 12-1 singles record.
In doubles action, Sotelo and Bugaj were perfect this season, winning all eight matches they played together.
Marquette is 4-16 overall this season and 0-7 in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles have lost their last six contests, most recently falling short against Butler, 4-1, on Saturday.
The Red Storm is 11-2 all-time against the Golden Eagles and has won the last seven matchups. The two programs have met four times in the BIG EAST Tournament since 2016, with the Johnnies emerging victorious on all four occasions.
The winner of Friday's quarterfinal will face the winner of Creighton and Butler in the semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m. Sunday's championship match is also slated to begin at 9 a.m.
