The Red Storm tied the game in the seventh before the Hoyas won on a walk-off hit
WASHINGTON D.C. – The St. John's softball team (21-23, 10-9) dropped the opening game of the series to Georgetown, 3-2, on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm and Hoyas (12-25, 3-13) went back and forth exchanging runs in the contest. In the seventh inning, the Johnnies knotted the game in the top half before Georgetown secured a walk-off victory in the bottom half.
London Jarrard crushed her team-leading seventh home run in the third inning of the contest. The junior also leads the Red Storm in RBIs (45), doubles (14), and slugging percentage (.607) this season.
Sophomore Cassidy Stouffer finished the afternoon 2-for-4 to lead the St. John's offense. The Miami, Fla., product delivered the clutch game-tying RBI single in the top half of the seventh for the Johnnies.
Starter Ana Serafinko put together a strong outing inside of the circle. The left-hander punched out nine batters while allowing three runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Serafinko helped set the tone early for the Johnnies, keeping the Hoyas off the scoreboard while punching out four in the opening two frames, 0-0.
In the top of the third, Jarrard launched a no-doubt home run off to left-center to give the Red Storm a 1-0 advantage. Stouffer followed up with a single through the left side, but Georgetown's Julia Parker recorded the final two outs to limit the damage.
The score held until Georgetown notched its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth when Gabby Park hit an RBI double to bring home Abby Kozo who hit a two-bagger to start the frame, 1-1.
An inning later, the Hoyas took their first lead of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth. Georgetown loaded the bases before Emily Strittmatter drew a walk to bring home a run, 2-1.
After two quick outs in the top of the seventh, the Red Storm offense showed fight when Maeve Marra battled through a full count to draw a walk and Jarrard was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Stouffer then came to the plate and delivered a game-tying RBI single up the middle, 2-2.
Georgetown answered back in the bottom half of the seventh, putting two on ahead of Park hitting the game-winning single into center field to give the Hoyas the series-opening 3-2 win.
The Red Storm and Hoyas will continue the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. from the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
