Amy Mallah and London Jarrard record RBIs to power the Red Storm past the Hoyas
WASHINGTON D.C. – The St. John's softball team (22-23, 11-9) downed Georgetown, 3-1, in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm found its way back into the win column after taking the lead in the fourth. Georgetown (12-26, 3-14) responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but St. John's tacked on another run late to secure the win.
Shortstop London Jarrard drilled her second home run in as many games during the sixth inning. This marks the first time this season a St. John's batter has homered in back-to-back games. Jarrard has accomplished the feat one other time in her career, homering against Creighton and then Butler in the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament.
Amy Mallah delivered a two-out RBI single to provide the Red Storm with its first lead in the fourth inning of the contest. The third baseman now has eight RBIs on the season.
Inside the circle, Loreley Francia recorded her 10th win of the year with a complete game effort. The Spring, Texas product allowed just one earned run on four hits while punching out eight batters in the contest. Francia lowered her ERA to 2.99 and has 121 punchouts following her ninth complete game of 2024.
Ana Serafinko and Natalie Casto each chipped in a base hit apiece during Saturday's contest for the Red Storm.
Game two of the series immediately started with a pitcher's duel between St. John's Francia and Georgetown's Kayla Dunn. The two pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts, each with seven apiece, in the first three innings to keep the game scoreless, 0-0.
The offenses finally came alive in the fourth inning. First, the Red Storm initiated a two-out rally when Serafinko hit a single through the right side and Katie Whittaker drew a pinch-hit walk to put two on. The runners moved up on a passed ball before Mallah delivered a base hit back up the middle to give St. John's a 2-0 advantage.
Gabby Park helped Georgetown get a run back in the home half of the fourth with an RBI triple into the right-center gap, 2-1. Francia limited the damage, stranding Lee on third by getting the final out of the frame and holding the Red Storm's one-run lead.
After a scoreless fifth, Jarrard led off the sixth by cranking her second solo home run in as many games over the right-field wall to extend the Johnnies' advantage, 3-1.
The Hoyas threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. However, Francia worked her way out of another jam, recording the final two outs to preserve St. John's 3-1 lead.
Francia shut the door on Georgetown in the bottom of the seventh, tossing another clean frame to secure the Red Storm's 3-1 victory.
St. John's and Georgetown will wrap up the series tomorrow at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy. The rubber match of the series is scheduled for noon.
