Tim Cunningham makes 92nd career appearance with Red Storm, Ben Beauchamp smacks fourth homer of the season
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The St. John's baseball team's (25-11-1, 6-4) comeback fell short with a 4-3 setback to Xavier (22-20, 6-4) at Hayden Field on Friday.
Ben Beauchamp smacked his fourth home run of the season, finishing the game with three RBIs. Garrett Scavelli extended his reached base streak to 24 games with a leadoff single to center in the third inning. The Franklin Square, N.Y., native went 2-for-4 at the dish, adding his third triple of the season.
Reliever Tim Cunningham shined out of the bullpen for the Red Storm on Friday, stifling the Xavier lineup in his career-high 3.1 innings of work. Making his 92nd career relief appearance, the right-hander surrendered just two hits and struck out three batters while throwing 29 of his 40 pitches for strikes.
Xavier jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the opening two frames. After a solo homer by Aedan Anderson in the bottom of the first, Luke Hammond followed up with a three-run home run of his own in the second frame to go up four.
The Red Storm pestered the Musketeers in the top of the third. St. John's put runners on first and second with one out before Beauchamp turned on an 0-2 pitch and watched his three-run homer fly over the left-field wall, bringing the Johnnies within one, 4-3.
Starter Kyle Chase settled in after the Musketeers got to him early, holding Xavier off the board through his final 2.2 innings of work. Cunningham came on to finish the fifth inning and blanked the home team in the sixth with a 1-2-3 frame.
The Johnnies' reliever continued to dominate the zone in the seventh inning, striking out two Musketeers, including Connor Misch to end the frame. Cunningham found himself in trouble with a runner on second in the eighth. However, the right-hander wrapped up his appearance with the Red Storm by inducing a strikeout, a flyout to center and a popup to right.
Xavier was also able to keep the Red Storm at bay over the final six innings, holding on for the one-run victory.
The Johnnies will continue its weekend series with Xavier on Saturday. First pitch from Hayden Field is slated for 1 p.m.
