St. John’s to Wrap Up Road Trip at Xavier

Red Storm is 6-3 on the road against the Musketeers
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (25-10-1, 6-3) will wrap up its road trip with a three-game conference series at Xavier (21-20, 5-4), beginning on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Red Storm will return to action on both Saturday and Sunday with each game being slated for 1 p.m. All three games will be live streamed on FloSports and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Garrett Scavelli has reached base safely in 23 straight games, a streak that began in the final game against Hofstra on March 8. Over the last month, the Franklin Square, N.Y., native has increased his on-base percentage from .315 in the first 14 games to .414 since starting his recent stretch.
The Red Storm earned its lone win against teams with an RPI of 35 or better this season, in the season opener against then No. 2 Florida (31). Xavier checked in at No. 32, as of Thursday, while the Johnnies rank 65th heading into the conference series.
St. John's shortstop Luke Orbon is two base knocks from registering 100 hits in his St. John's career. Reliever Tim Cunningham is also close to a major St. John's milestone, posting 91 appearances out of the bullpen. He is two appearances away from tying Joe Kelly (93, 2013-16) for the third-most outings in program history.
The Johnnies are among the nation's top offensive teams with 17 triples (7th), 90 doubles (25th) and a .303 batting average (42nd). Blake Mayberry has emerged as an offensive threat this season with a .387 average (2nd in BE) and a .489 on-base percentage (3rd).
St. John's will look for its first series win in Cincinnati since taking the final two games in 2018. The Johnnies routed the Musketeers with its highest offensive output, a 34-7 victory on April 28, seeing current assistant coach John Valente smack a grand slam and log a career-high five RBIs. The Red Storm claimed the series with a 9-4 win the day after as Valente ripped his second homer in as many games. St. John's is 6-3 all-time at the Musketeers.
Xavier is coming off a midweek 7-6 victory over Northern Kentucky on Wednesday. Aedan Anderson finished homered twice in the game, logging three RBIs in the effort and tying Matt McCormick for the conference lead (12).
The Musketeers have smacked a BIG EAST-leading 61 homers in 2024, also good for 50th in the nation. Xavier has also drawn 193 walks in 2024, ranking third in the conference.
Jared Kushing leads the team with 46 hits and a .291 batting average through 41 games. The trio of Kushing, Anderson and McCormick has combined for 44.2 percent of Xavier's run production with 102 RBIs this year.
