The Red Storm celebrated its three graduating seniors after the contest
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (25-25, 12-11) dropped game two of the series to Seton Hall, 8-3, on Saturday during Senior Day at Red Storm Field.
At the conclusion of the contest, the Red Storm recognized its three graduating seniors – Amy Mallah, Hannah Mearns and Madison Wallace – for their contributions to the program during their career at St. John's.
For the second consecutive game, London Jarrard launched a solo home run for longball No. 10 on the season. With the homer, Jarrard tied Erin Burner's single-season RBI record of 49 which was set back in the 2015 season. The shortstop has homered in back-to-back games for the second straight BIG EAST series after she recorded a pair of round-trippers in the opening two contests at Georgetown.
Mallah finished her Senior Day with two singles and an RBI. The third baseman helped the Johnnies tie the game in the third on an RBI base hit into right field.
Center fielder Sydney Totarsky finished the afternoon with two hits as well, helping lead the Red Storm offense. The sophomore has two home runs and 12 RBIs on the season for St. John's.
Starter Loreley Francia set the tone early for the Red Storm, tossing a 1-2-3 frame and recording a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first, 0-0.
In the bottom half, Jarrard led off by taking the first pitch she saw over the right-center field wall for a solo home run, 1-0.
The Pirates responded an inning later when Kelsey Carr hit a two-run home run to left, providing Seton Hall with a 2-1 lead midway through the third.
London Slade kicked off the home half of the third with a single back up the middle and swiped second before Jarrard walked to put runners on the corners. An out later, Mallah delivered a bloop single down the right-field line to tie the ballgame, 2-2. Seton Hall's starter Sydney Babik limited the damage, retiring the next two batters to keep the game even after three.
Francia settled back into the circle in the top of the fourth, retiring the Pirates in order for the second time in the contest, 2-2.
The Red Storm offense found a spark for the second consecutive frame with Anese Thompson drawing a walk and Cassidy Stouffer lining a single into left to start the bottom of the fourth. Elanna Lysiak pinch-ran for Thompson, advancing to third and eventually scoring on a pair of wild pitches to give St. John's a 3-2 advantage.
After a scoreless fifth, the Pirates notched two runs in the sixth to change leads for the fourth time in the contest. A Lela Allen RBI single and Andrea Perez sacrifice fly plated the pair of runs for Seton Hall, allowing them to take the 4-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Seton Hall tailed four more runs to put the game out of reach and secure the 8-3 victory on Saturday.
St. John's and Seton Hall will wrap up the three-game set tomorrow at noon in Queens.
